Lead-Based Paint

The focus of Georgia EPD's Lead-Based Paint Program is to minimize the spread of lead dust and debris. The program regulates activities that disturb lead-based paint in target housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978.

Common renovation, repair, and painting activities that disturb lead-based paint can create hazardous lead dust and chips. This can be harmful to adults, but particularly to children who are at the highest risk from lead poisoning. Lead poisoning in children can cause lower IQ, hyperactivity, slowed growth, hearing problems, and in rare cases, ingestion can cause seizures, coma, and even death. It is important to be aware of the dangers of lead and how to reduce exposure.

Contractor activity, such as Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP), that incidentally disturbs lead-based paint in residential properties or child-occupied facilities built before 1978 is covered by Georgia's RRP rule.

Lead-based Paint Abatement is the intentional permanent removal or encapsulation of lead-based paint and lead hazards.
