I would prefer all-electric, but there aren’t any BEVs with the cargo and passenger capacity at a price point I am willing to pay. So, it’s a stop gap until BEVs offer more body styles and vehicle types at More affordable prices.

I do find myself wishing it had about double the all-electric range. But so far we are showing ~90% electric miles.

Comment on Toyota plans to use solid-state batteries to enable longer-range EVs with fast-charging by Cristian Miuta https://electrek.co/2017/07/25/toyota-solid-state-batteries-long-range-evs-fast-charging/#comment-45520 Wed, 13 Sep 2017 09:56:57 +0000 http://electrek.co/?p=48420#comment-45520 The problem with solid-state lithium-ion batteries, at least to date, has been the poor conductance of the solid electrolyte. Most solids that conduct ions do so only sparingly, especially near room temperature, which is key for portable electronics. And an improvement in one property often comes at the expense of another. For example, modifying a solid to boost its ionic conductivity via chemical treatment or other means could make it more difficult to process, less stable electrochemically, or more expensive.

Got a second hand unit a couple of months ago (to go with my shiny new kinetic blue Gen 2 Volt!!!), charger worked until a couple of days ago. Came home to find my charger no longer had any lights on (not blue nor fault-indicating red) and was concerningly hot. Not (yet) dripping flaming plastic hot but yeah, toasty. It’s now dead dead dead, I guess some component shorted. Apparently it turns out to have been a demo only unit, so they won’t honor the warranty. That’s weird, not sure if the original owner knew either, but okay fine – fml. Also found out it’s four months after the warranty would have expired (as they pointed out as a rationale in disowning the charger). So I guess I was always screwed, but just be aware that after three years they will absolutely wash their hands of their product. No help from them, and not a hint of interest in a potentially dangerous failure mode. If I were them I would at least be asking for the return of the unit to debug what component shorted out and do a risk assessment on it. I sure won’t be replacing it with another one.

As a Tesla owner I can attest to the battery travel distance claims of Tesla both in terms of reliability and consistency from any starting state of charge.

Lights, license plate and some sensors – what else is in the hatch?
As usually – it’s all about money. Someone has to come up with the idea. I think such a conversion would sell well in Europe, especially Northern Europe.

Now add a towing hook to that conversion, and the segment of potential buyers would increase immensely.

I want an EV with a towing hook – but I don’t appreciate the complexity of the Model X falcon doors. And the glass is nice, but eventually the insurance companies will get tired of replacing ~3000 USD glass sections.

Comment on Tesla is suing over Utah’s direct sales law in order to be able to operate its Salt Lake City store by BJ https://electrek.co/2016/02/24/tesla-utah-direct-sales-salt-lake/#comment-29515 Mon, 25 Jul 2016 17:14:48 +0000 http://electrek.co/?p=11258#comment-29515 When you watch the whole discussion on the bill, a representative indicated they needed more time to review the bill. Didn’t they have time to review it? I can’t ask people including myself to make a decision on something without some time to analyze pros and cons. Yet they still voted anyway and the bill didn’t pass. So more than half of the state representatives stopped this from happening because they didn’t have time to review. This is why I have no confidence in politics. I live in Utah, and this is a joke. I say if the free market puts the dealership model out of business so be it. Politicians should not be making laws to protect businesses because consumer trends shift. Lots of businesses are going bankrupt because of the market changes. Look at Blockbuster or Borders books store. Tesla should be allowed to sell cars directly to consumers in the state.

On another note. This WHOLE issue is about “direct sales.” I can order the car online at my home in Utah and pick the car up at the showroom. I was just there the other day and a Utah resident was picking up their new model X. I don’t know why people think you can’t buy a tesla in Utah or have to go to other states to buy the car. You can, it just can’t be done within the Tesla showroom. You have to click the “buy it now” button at your home or somewhere else besides the showroom.

Comment on The Power of Controllable Charging Load – Is Tesla working on a “bi-directional” home charging station? by David Grove https://electrek.co/2015/08/16/the-power-of-controllable-charging-load-is-tesla-working-on-a-bi-directional-charging-station/#comment-29496 Sun, 24 Jul 2016 22:43:38 +0000 http://electrek.co/?p=4391#comment-29496 The home solar/storage type system seems the most practical.
Your solar system supplies power to the home during daytime and stores unused solar production to your home battery.
When you return home, charge your car from solar until sundown then from stored power in the home battery.
Homeowners that invest in these systems will store their power not export it to the grid.
Grid tie will be needed for winter/low sun and high load uses.
Homeowners that don’t invest in clean renewable energy systems will have to depend on the grid only.

If you truly purchased a vehicle worth double your annual salary (uh, wow, bad decision unless you are independently wealthy), you should have no problem qualifying for the incentive. The incentives are based on income, not the vehicle.

How do you let the car drive off the roadway without intervening? In all likelyhood the reason is, that the driver was not paying attention! Pilots of Airliners who fall asleep or are inattentive to the autopilot are still at fault if the automation does something unexpected and they (the pilots) fail to intervene. This is less about the limitations of the “Autopilot” but, more about about the human factors that lead to these sort of accidents.

On top of the many easily identified subsidies, historians will insist on adding in the cost of the Iraq wars and all other Mid-East initiatives designed to “keep the oil flowing” to the rest of the world. Some estimate that well over half of the defense budget can be argued as safeguarding oil.

You’ve seen those medieval war tools that were used to chuck huge boulders? I’m not getting its name. C something. It has a swing arm that builds momentum fast for about a quarter turn.

So load a plane on it and as soon as it develops full power release it like a boulder. Hire engineers to design the lock and release mechanism.

Ah, no. I don’t know how to land it. Maybe use a cable to grab it’s wheel like on aircraft carriers? Or bounce on a giant trampoline. Let it take off first, eh.

So anyway, if that C machine is too much of a sudden load on internal components and passengers, use the same steam powered machine used to launch planes on carriers.

Cheers.

So you are going to use solar to create Hydrogen…
1. You now have to transport all those cylinders to another holding tank with Diesel Trucks.
2. You have to create incredibly expensive fuelling stations.
3. Hydrogen is inefficient
4. Terrorists will love Hydrogen.
5. Big oil will switch to Hydrogen and will continue to make billions from us.
6.

I’ll let others fill in the multitude of reasons why this is a bad idea.

Hydrogen is the answer. Making hydrogen from oil/gas is stupid. Solar energy changed into hydrogen is the smartest renewable energy known to man. A catalyzing material (usually platinum) is needed to perform electrolysis. The hydrogen is captured in regular run-of-the-mill, usually steel, propane cylinder tanks and are the most common type of LP gas containers in the world. They number in the billions. Hydrogen has no shelf life. It has no expiration date. It can be used to cook with. It can be changed into fuel cells. I suggest that you do some serious research into the proven capability of hydrogen as the most sustainable renewable CLEAN energy. Zero carbon emissions. NASA has been using hydrogen for many years. Mike Strizki is a friend of mine and holds many patents for this technology.
