Salary and allowances

ECDC offers competitive salaries, based on a basic salary scale for each contract type, function group and grade. The basis for working conditions, salary and allowances are the Staff Regulations and the Conditions of Employment of Other Servants of the European Union. 

Allowances and benefits are added to the basic salary, depending on an individual’s situation. Staff pay a European tax which is deducted from the salary at source. Deductions are also made for sickness and accident insurance, pensions, and unemployment insurance. 

Salaries are exempt from national income tax. 

Staff who move to Sweden can benefit from financial support for the transition period when relocating, including moving support. 

The basic salary is adjusted with a local weighting (known as a correction coefficient) to align it with the cost of living in Sweden compared to Brussels.

Staff members with spouses and/or children can apply for reimbursement of school fees, household allowance, and dependent child allowances.

Health and accident insurance

ECDC staff are covered by the EU employee private insurance scheme offering worldwide medical insurance. Under certain conditions, family members can be covered free of charge. 

All staff members are covered by the staff accident insurance. 

Pension and unemployment scheme

Staff members are part of the EU employee pension scheme, which gives access to pension rights after 10 years of contribution. Contributions made for shorter periods are transferred to individual private pension schemes. Staff are entitled to pension cover that includes invalidity if they are no longer able to work, and survivors' pensions are paid to family members and dependents.  

Health at work

ECDC’s premises offer a fitness room for our staff, which includes a sauna and exercise courses that can be booked privately. 

As a service to our staff, a medical advisor is available for consultation and all staff are invited to take part in a yearly annual preventive health check paid by the Centre.
 

ECDC aims to create and maintain a healthy balance between work and personal responsibilities. This includes: 

• Flexible working hours 
• Hybrid working (teleworking) – up to 60% of working time can be done from home in the Stockholm area. 
• Up to 10 days per calendar year can be worked from outside Stockholm. 
• Part-time work options
• Generous annual leave – approximately 30 days of annual leave per year, depending on age group, expatriation status and grade.
• In addition, ECDC has 17 additional days that are closed for public holidays which are not included in the personal holidays. ECDC is always closed between Christmas and New Year. 
• Maternity and parental leave – until children are 12 years old. 

Unpaid leave and special leave for specific family situations.

Learning, development and growth

We invest in our staff to enable them to be and do their best. Learning opportunities are targeted to build the capability of our employees to drive Agency objectives and priorities. We encourage our employees to grow personally and professionally ensuring they have the right competencies to do their job.  

ECDC offers in-house courses, as well as access to the vast Commission training catalogue and LinkedIn Learning. Additionally, there is a generous individual training budget that can be tailored to individual needs and wishes.

The place of employment is Stockholm, and all successful candidates need to reside in or relocate to Stockholm when their employment with ECDC starts.

The ECDC offices are located in Frösunda, a district in Solna, north of Stockholm City with good connections to Stockholm City and the airport.

Stockholm is a perfect mix of culture with its historic city centre and nature. It is spread over 14 islands and is surrounded by water, the archipelago, forests and lakes.

Getting around in Stockholm is easy due to its well-functioning public transportation network, which includes buses, trams, subway, commuter trains and boat connections, and extensive bicycle lanes.

The city is very family-friendly and the public school system is very accessible and free. There are also international schools (English-, French-, and German-speaking), and for some of them you would need to pay a fee. 

Healthcare in Stockholm

There are many healthcare centres (vårdcentral or husläkarmottagning) spread all over Stockholm. 

The website of 1177.se offers healthcare information and lists the healthcare providers in Sweden. You can also call the 1177 helpline to receive healthcare advice. 

Many healthcare providers offer their services in English as well and can also offer online consultations. 

Relocation to Stockholm

ECDC offers help for newcomers to move to Stockholm. Staff are entitled to receive financial support for the removal and installation in Stockholm. 

Besides the financial support, staff members can also take Swedish language courses. 

ECDC provides also support to staff members and families for registration in Stockholm to obtain the 'personnummer' (tax registration number).
