Why are my AirPods connected but no sound while playing games?

i was playing minecraft on my iphone 12 pro with my airpods pro in and the sound works perfectly fine but as soon as i put them away the sound completely stops. I know others have had the same issue but i couldn’t find an answer. the sound only stops with games, youtube and other similar apps aren’t affected
