Apple Pay working intermittently (iPhone 15 Pro)

Hi everyone, my Apple Pay contactless card payment is working intermittently : around half of the time, no payments goes through, i have to initiate the payment 2,3,4 times or more. in the end that works. I have an iPhone 15 Pro.

I tried all the usual suspects as potential fixes - none of them will work. I don't use any phone case when initiating the transaction, I restarted my phone, updated iOS, etc. The issue is particularly annoying as I can't rely on my phone as a payment method - I constantly must have my physical card with me .

Having identical issues and I’m getting caught out which is embarrassing if I haven’t got my wallet with me. Had no issues with my iPhone 12 Pro before I upgraded a few months back. Really frustrating.

I actually may have solved it. Now, I am always sequentially : 1/ FaceID-ing for authentication and 2/ approaching my phone close to the terminal. It looked like my iPhone didn't like much the all-in one "Face ID+Phone close to terminal+upcoming transaction signal" approach.

Let's hope I found the key and I won't come back with any complaints ;-)

Any more information on this issue? I have been fighting it since I got the 15pro. I usually just switch to my watch as that still works but it is so frustrating. If I restart my phone before shopping, it seems to work fine.

Your technique is off. Hold the phone up near your face and activate Apple Pay by double clicking side/power button. Use Face ID to authorize transaction. Once your default card is displayed, Apple Pay is active and you move the iPhone close (within 2 inches) to the transaction terminal. Hold iPhone near the terminal for 3 to 5 seconds until tone is heard and screen displays confirmation that transaction/purchase was successful.

It's on me. I was totally off. I didn't realize one should double tap and get Face ID triggered BEFORE engaging the contactless for payment.
