how big is ios 18.0.1 supposed to be??

i know that update size varies depending on individual devices but my ios 18.0.1 shows as being 10.5gb. ill be updating from ios 18 on an iphone 13 so i cant imagine that a .0.1 update would be over 10gigs. it wants me to delete a bunch of content in order to facilitate the update but its stuff i need for work. i do regular updates and i dont have any apps installed, i use my phone for calls and messaging and thats it. is there a way i can only install the security updates or something in order to slim down the size?

iPad, iPadOS 18

In context of performance, you have perhaps mis-read the release notes for iOS 18.0.1. The release states that the update provides fixes for a number of items - including a fix for poor performance:

iOS 18.0.1

This update provides important bug fixes and security updates for your iPhone including:

  • Touch screen may be temporarily unresponsive in certain circumstances on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models
  • Camera may freeze when recording macro mode video on the Ultra Wide camera in 4K with HDR turned off on iPhone 16 Pro models
  • Messages may unexpectedly quit when replying to a message with a shared Apple Watch face
  • Performance may be impacted due to an issue with memory allocation on some iPhone models

Updating to iOS 18/18.0.1 from an earlier major version requires a complete reinstall of iOS - and as such the update will be considerably larger than that of a point update.

Hello The SlowKnife,

On my iPhone 13 Pro Max the IOS 18.0.1 update was 318.3 MBs not 10GBs.

  • There is a way to do the Security Responses & System Files Updates in Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates click(set this to Off) > Under Automatically Install Security Responses & System Files> Slide this to On. I have IOS Updates set to Off. You can decide if you want the Automatically Download IOS Updates On or Off.
  • I have not installed the IOS 18.0.1 update because of the Last Notation about the Update which said, "Performance may be impacted due to an issue with memory allocation on some iPhone Models. It does not say which iPhone models. So I'm thinking maybe I should hold off updating to see input from other users. Have you experienced any impact on Performance with your iPhone 13 ? It may just be the iPhone 16 models, but not sure.

More storage required ⚠️

This update cannot be installed because it requires at least 8.18gb of available storage for installation.

It is generally recommended that you maintain 4-6GB of free space at all times - as your iPhone/iPad needs some temporary space to complete some tasks - such as performing system software updates. System software updates may temporarily require much more.

A system software update requires sufficient space to be downloaded, unpacked and verified prior to installation - major version updates (such as updating from iOS/iPadOS 17.x to 18.x) requiring considerably more space than an incremental point-update. After the update is successfully completed, temporary files are automatically deleted - returning free space.

If your internal storage is full, or is insufficient for the task that you need to perform, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.  Don't forget, this must be free-space on the device itself.

“Offloading” Apps can be a helpful method of creating temporary space for a software update.

External storage options can often help with managing limited internal storage. Depending upon your deice model, it will either have a Lightning or USB-C port - and may therefore require either an Adapter or USB hub to connect the USB Storage device. If your device has a Lightning port, you’ll need an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:

LotusPilot,

Thanks for the reply. I thought the wording of the IOS 18.0.1 update was a little off on the Performance statement and not clear on which iPhones would be impacted, but I guess that Memory Allocation is the issue being addressed in the update. No issues for me on the IOS 18 upgrade, so I'll do the 18.0.1 update.
