Why is my drive showing read-only permissions on macOS Monterey?

Hi. I’ve been cloning and updating my main drive for years. I’m on Monterey and when I get info for this drive, under “sharing and permissions” it says You can only read. Underneath, where the admins are listed, it says System, then Wheel, then Everyone. System is read and write, the other two are read only. Although I am the administrator and nothing seems to impede my use of the computer, I cannot change any of these settings and I get the “the operation can’t be completed because you do not have the necessary permission.” Anyone who could help with that gets my highest appreciation, and a box of donuts. Thanks. Btw, issue was the same on Big Sur, and Mojave before that.

The OS resides on a read only volume now. That’s completely normal with modern versions of macOS.

You’ll need to adjust your backup / cloning strategy to take that into account.
