Can you copy or move markers?

I have added several interview clips to my timeline and have put in several dozen markers. I have also added an adjustment layer and quite a few other corrections. Bottom line is a done a lot of work and I don't want to lose all the markers which is what happens once I make a compound clip out of it. I know the markers are not gone, I can simply open the compound clip, but I need to see the same markers while viewing the compound clip itself. Is this possible to copy and paste all these markers to outside the compound clip?

Not sure if that's the right way to word it but that's the way I'm wording it. :)

Right click on the Marker and select Copy:



Move the playhead where you want to paste and select the clip (if it's a secondary storyline, title, etc.) and type ⌘-V to paste the marker.


You can move markers 1 frame at a time:

select the marker, type Control-period to move right or Control-comma to move left.


You can continue to hold down the keystroke to continually move the markers.


The copy/paste method would be faster in most cases.


You should be able to copy/paste marker from inside a compound to the compound itself. The problem is going to be: when you copy the marker inside the compound and go "up" -- the playhead is usually at the beginning of the compound clip in the storyline. You'll have to locate the same frame to paste it to if you need to do that.

I don't know of a way to do this natively in FCP but if there is, hopefully someone will chime in.


A possible solution is to use the free CommandPost dot io to export the Index of markers as a csv, then bring that into Marker Toolbox and export back to FCP. I've never tried this so it might not work the way you'd like.


EDIT: Maybe you can convert from the CSV Index export to titles using the free (experimental) tools at editingtools dot io.

Thank you, Terry. I looked into all of this and unfortunately, even though you can export markers there is no way to import them back in to the compound clip. Seems to me this would be an easy thing to do and can't believe it cannot be done since compound clips are frequently used. I ended up using keyboard maestro to create a short little macro to speed up the process for me. I still have to do them one at a time, but it's a lot faster than going through a full sequence of copying and pasting, and then finding the correct spot in the timeline to paste the marker. A huge PIA.
