Security scan on my MacBook

I have never done anything like this before. I am dictating this so excuse any spelling mistakes because I am a one thumb typer kind of

guy! so I just struggle through anything technical but anyway I’m having a problem with my MacBook. I’m sure it’s got infected or someone’s hacked into it and it’s running really weirdly and I was just wondering if anyone knew what I can do to give it a sweep as in clean it up is there any free programs and what’s quick and simple thanks anyway. John

ps. I think it’s all up-to-date with the latest program, but if anyone can suggest anything quick and simple, much appreciated, thanks. :)

OS X 10.10 Yosemite 2014- has not been updated since 2017 10.10.5

You do not say "running weirdly" how...(?)

What exact Mac is this?

what exact macOS are you running?

unplug all non-essential peripherals when testing

Uninstall all third party apps that are Cleaners/Optimizers/VPN/Anti-Virus

all known to cause issues on the macOS

To trouble shoot further you can:

—A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

This test will tell you if third party interference; most extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.
