Using SUMIF in formula?

I have spreadsheet similar to a check book register with debits and credits in different columns and then a third column with the running total. Example below



I would like to add a column with a checkbox so that it only changes the total column when that row has a checkbox. I would like to keep debits and credits in separate columns. Example below.



What would be the formula in running total column using an IF formula?
