Apple Photos - Sync from iPhone directly to iPad (without going to iCloud first)?

I take pictures with my iPhone (15 Pro Max), but then like to edit them on my iPad (Pro M4).

To get the photos on my iPad, I have to wait for the iPhone to first upload to iCloud, then the iPad can get them from iCloud.

Sometimes this process takes several hours. Is there a way for me to connect my iPhone directly to my iPad to "transfer" the photos faster, without needing iCloud in the middle?

Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I see delays when wifi is flaky, or sometimes when the devices are not plugged in. I sometimes get better results using cellular rather than wifi. These are highly un-tested and may be me finding patterns that don't really exist. An interesting thing to try would be to use the phone as the HotSpot for the iPad-- I haven't really tried that to see if it speeds things up.

Mostly, if I'm in a hurry, I use AirDrop, as Mac Jim ID suggested.
