Does Universal Control with Magic Keyboard work between two docked Macbooks

I have a small desk nook so I have to close and dock my work MBP M2 and my personal MBA M3 while using an external monitor. Universal Control works when they are both open but switching between the two closed Macs doesn't work unless I have the keyboard plugged into the dock. Are my settings off or is this not an option?

Just a guess – but assuming that the MBP and MBA are connected to different input ports on the same monitor, maybe when you close them both, at most one of them thinks it has a display. (That being the Mac hooked up to the currently-selected input on the monitor.)

I could see "not having a display" affecting a feature which switches control of the keyboard and mouse from one system to another based on you pushing the pointer "off the edge" of one device's display onto the other device's display.
