Ken Burns Crop sends the program off the rails

How do I fix this?? I've been having this issue with Final Cut Pro for about a week now: attempting to adjust the Ken Burns Crop causes the program to get buggy and lag. First, I can't see my adjustments as the refresh takes several seconds. Then, as I try to adjust the "end" screen, the program becomes completely unresponsive. The only way then is to force quit and relaunch FCP.

Doing anything else doesn't seem to cause any issues. I just ran an update to Sonoma 14.5 (23F79) but this has not helped. My library is on an external drive that still has 1TB free space. It's a complete mystery.

As Luis says, this is a known bug with three finger drag in FCP 10.8. If you have not disabled automatic App updates, your FCP was updated to 10.8 and you are likely encountering this new bug. I always recommend turning off automatic App Store and macOS updates so the timing of updates is under your control. (And before you update FCP, always make a zip backup of the current FCP just in case you need to roll back. Same goes for Motion and Compressor.)

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I am using the trackpad on my MBP but the issue only started about a week ago with no changes on my part so that's the strange thing.

So far, I have managed to fix (or at least drastically improve) the issue by creating a new user on my computer and opening FCP in the new user profile with the same external HD library. No issue there. Then logged into my main user account again and the Ken Burns crop, although not butter smooth, works significantly better. I will leave it as is for now as all I needed was to urgently complete the project at hand.

Delete Preferences: To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an “Untitled” library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

If the problem persists: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

The moderators may not allow this, but since you're having so much trouble, would an alternative be worth considering?

Timed Ken Burns effect:

The start and end view areas are set with parameter sliders. You cannot change the aspects - they both automatically match the clip/image it's placed on. Start and End views are set with OnScreen Controls and you cannot go outside the bounds of the clip/image.

It's reversible and offers two more interpolation/animation type options: Accelerate and Decelerate.

Animation time is based on the time length of the clip (blading after applying will shorten the animation time - so readjustments may be necessary.)

It "scales" beautifully! As good as the built in Ken Burns. IMO, it's faster and easier to use.
