It only wakes up when I tap the screen.
I have checked theatre mode and it was already on.
My orientation is correctly on my left hand.
I had tried restarting the watch; downloading the latest update; Toggling both of the above settings.
The watch face also has stopped responding with the charge icon when I placed it on the charger.
Any other suggestions of things to try?

Does your watch charge when you put it on the charger since the charging UI doesn't appear? Regardless if your watch is lying flat or upright, the charging indicator should appear. The only time it doesn't show is when full contact is not made.
Have you tried restarting the Apple watch?
Do you have Low Batter Mode enabled? However, wrist rotation doesn't seem to be a feature that this disables.

If theatre mode is ON it will not light up on raise. Theatre mode needs to be OFF for this feature to work
My bad. I meant to say it was already off.
Just on the off chance that it was disabled, verify that raise to wake is turned on in Watch (app) > Display & Brightness > Wake on Wrist Raise.
Yes, I checked the settings on the watch as well as on the app, and both had it turned off.
I don’t know why I said disabled. Raise to wake should be on, not off. My bad.
