Watch doesn't automatically install iPhone apps

I got a refurbished SE 2nd generation 44 mm watch yesterday to go with my iPhone. I am most interested in getting Dexcom G6 readings on the watch, but can't find a Complication that offers it. But even more troubling is that I can't get any of the iPhone apps to "automatically" load onto my phone, despite having the phone set for Automatic App Install. The apps are listed with spinning circles that have gone on ever since I started trying to use the phone. (In trying to get the apps onto the phone, I shut off both the phone and the app. Now the watch seems to want to be paired with the phone again, although the phone shows it is paired.) I could go on explaining problems, but I need someone to talk with. I've used Facebook advice and Youtube advice over and over today, but any suggestions they made were useless, even though they got my hopes up from time to time.

After the watch repeatedly refused to install the apps, even though I shut down and restarted both the phone and the watch again, one time suddenly the apps started installing, quickly! I noted that some instruction said to touch the watch with the phone to pair them, and I made sure to do that this time. Maybe it made a difference? The apps all installed, but the watch Dexcom app told me to check my iPhone Dexcom app, so I phoned Dexcom. A rep spent quite a while on the phone with me, going through a restart that didn't work, but finally telling me to shut both down, wait a couple minutes, restart them both, wait 15 minutes, and then try. That worked! I took the watch to another room to show my wife, and the app quit working. I started to phone Dexcom again, then realized that I have to keep the watch and the phone together (apparently within 30 feet of each other) for the app to work, as when I brought the phone back near the phone, the app started working again.

iPhone apps do not run on the Apple Watch. It has to be an app explicitly written for the Apple Watch. Some iPhone apps do have companion Apple Watch apps. You should be able to install them via the iPhone Watch app. And there are some apps that are for the Apple Watch only, which can be installed via the Apple Watch App Store, or via the iPhone Watch app.
