Safari hangs

I know that whenever I get a human verification check served by Cloudflare that my Safari browser is done -- the Cloudflare puzzle doesn't even load. I can still use all the tabs that are open, but trying to access new sites doesn't do anything at all. Additionally, terminating Safari and restarting does absolutely nothing to resolve the issue.

The root of the problem appears to be com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.Service. When I shutdown Safari there are several processes that linger -- this being one of them. When this problem occurs a "kill <process-id>" of the process id for this service does not stop it -- only a "kill -9 <process-id>" works.

Once this process is killed and Safari is restarted, then all is well. The problem is that a lot of sites use Cloudflare, so you never know when you'll face it and Safari will then die.

Thanks for starting this post.

I have the same problem. I try to visit a website, and I get the Cloudflare "Verifying you are human. This may take a few seconds." loading page, but no verification puzzle loads or check box appears. There is a small little verifying box that says "Verification is taking longer than expected. Check your Internet connection and refresh the page if the issue persists." The window just hangs and all other ability to access websites on other tabs is blocked. Closing Safari and restarting does nothing to fix the issue. I usually just close the offensive tab, walk away from the computer for 20 minutes or so and when I come back Safari is working again.

I am using a 2020 MacBook Air running Sonoma 14.0 and Safari 17.0. I have AdGuard 1.11.18 installed as well.

Turning off / removing AdGuard does not help the problem. As you have discovered, the process com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.Service is somehow related. I can bring up activity monitor, search for this process, force kill it, and without restarting Safari the other tabs will be able to access new web sites.

I have nothing useful to add to solve this problem.
