New iPad Pro 13 inch M4 Overheating

Same here, although not just with Procreate, even with Apple's freeform. It gets to the point where I can barely write on the screen, and then the apps start closing. I then decided to try the iPad Air. I had no issues, but I didnt like the Air, so I went back and changed back to the Pro and even with the new one, I'm having the same issues. I'm not sure if it's the new screen or the software issue, but Apple, please fix this!!

I am having the same issue with my iPad Pro 13 inch m4. It only took a few minutes to heat up at the centre region slightly right when using Procreate. I have never experienced such heat on my iPad Air 3.

It is not unusual for an iPad to become warm when being used - more so when using some types of iPad case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat.

The key point is that whilst your iPad may become very warm in normal use, the iPad should not become uncomfortably hot to handle. If your iPad is becoming too hot to hold, you should take your iPad along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store - where the technicians can examine and test your iPad for faults.

My battery performance goes down the toilet when it begins to heat up. It's so very frustrating. And I have my screen brightness set at around 30% to try and mitigate, but it doesn't help.

Annoying...to say at the very least.

Procreate has a note on their app page that says full support for the Apple Pencil Pro is coming soon (although you didn’t mention if you were using the pencil I think most people that use Procreate are). Could be that the heat you are experiencing if it is more than you may have experienced on a previous iPad using the app may be tied to the app still needing an update. Especially if it is the only app you experience this with. Just something to consider in addition to what has already been suggested.

Also, 17.5.1 has been released as of today. Not sure if one of the bug fixes may be related to any heating issues but it’s possible.

I’m commenting on all the m4 overheating threads. I just got off the phone with Apple and they said this is the first they’re hearing about this. They don’t look on here lol. They want more people to call and report this so they can explore what’s happening. They are replacing my iPad btw. Sending one in the mail, and I’ll send mine back.

Has anything changed or have you figured out anything to stop this?

I have the new m4 pro 13in and as with you, procreate is the only app that makes it hot, uncomfortably hot,not like my previous iPad at all. I attributed it cause of the thinness. But the new thermal performance was promoted and I thought this wouldn’t be a problem.. Procreate still doesn’t have an update.

Same issue with me. How about the battery performance when it overheats? It is overheating with any sketch or drawing app I have tested many like notes, notability, goodnotes6 etc. First, I thought its application related issue but now it is confirmed that iPad itself is struggling with overheating along with fast battery drain.

Honestly the replacement iPad is only a little better. I think may have something to do with the apple pencil pro now. I’m not sure but if you scroll up someone mentioned something about the pro settings and how it can be attributed to higher temperatures. And I think I’ve noticed the times I use my iPad without the pencil I don’t notice high temps.

i just called to Apple and told them this **** hurts lol and she was like omg, let’s get you a new one

The ipad is hot but I cannot tell how hot it is, I would say it warm up my desk, it is almost like the temperature when you are using a window laptop, the center is hotter, also when the pen was charging, the pen was warm as well, I am not sure what are the problems, seems like it is procreate but I am not sure, I think when using youtube it turns warmer but not as obvious as procreate.

Ensure that you have disabled the Accessibility Zoom function. Many reports have been seen here that attribute unexpected high temperatures when using Procreate with an Apple Pencil:

Settings > Accessibility > [Vision] Zoom > Zoom - set to OFF
