AirPods Pro 2 music distorted with Apple Watch

I have brand new AirPods Pro 2. When connected to my iPhone 14 music sounds great. Connects to Apple Watch, but downloaded music starts to play then immediately starts crackling with music cutting out. All devices are updated. I’ve unpaired the reinstalled air pods but no change.

Same problem. It’s horrible. When listening through my iPhone 12, it’s flawless. Try to take a run with my Apple Watch SE (2nd Generation), it literally sounds like a really badly scratched CD back in the 90s. I have an old set of Bose Soundsport Free wireless headphones (that are almost shot, which is why I bought the AirPod Pro 2). Bose connects and plays through Apple Watch perfectly.

I’m returning the AirPods as I’m still in the 14 day window. I expect much higher quality out of Apple. Guess I’ll be getting new Bose.

The only solution I have found that works reliably is to turn off Bluetooth on the  WATCH and then turn it back on. A restart of the  WATCH also works but that can take forever. I have had this problem on several watch models, including the Ultra 1 and Ultra 2.

Oddly enough, only Apple AirPods (all versions) have this issue for me. Third party headphones, including Beats (without the H1 chipset) don’t have this issue.
