After upgrading to ios 17.1.1 the book app for audio books doesn't work. When playing the book there will be sound for 3 seconds and then the timer shows the book is playing but no sound comes out. This is true with bluetooth, through the phone, without or without wi-fi.

Update to iOS 17.2, seeing if you get this error:

My apologies. iOS17.2 is still in beta. So, do not install it. As for when it is to be released, I would not know. So, post something on the iOS 17.2 Developer Forms.

Start with a Restart:
Restart your iPhone, having just performed the update. That may get things going as they should. Restarting after an update is always a wise decision.
IOS 17.5.1. The same problem. Any help?
All M4b files do this even with alternate apps (bookplayer) sideloaded through itunes file sharing. Phone restore doesn’t fix it. Neither does deleting the books and reloading them. Nor does deleting and reloading the books app.
After working with Apple Support and trying all standard fixes, I was transferred to a supervisor and was given a possible work around. This was to Sign Out of Media & Services in System Settings. This worked to allow me to access my current book, but once having reset Media & Services and closing Apple Books app, I am back to square one. So it is a temporary fix to allow you to read for one session, then you need to do it again in order to read again. OS 7.1.1 needs fixed.
Thanks for the workaound but I tried it and it didn't work for me. I did get about 5 seconds of the audio book to work and was really hopeful but then it stopped again. So I agree with you that they need to fix this since in your case it works temporarily and for me it didn't work at all. It could have something to do with other settings or the book format.
