Mac Compressor shows 'Missing Plugin' and Red Screen after Final Cut Export (Solution & Question)

This is actually the same question as what has been posted previously >> "Mac Compressor shows 'Missing Plugin' and Red Screen after Final Cut Export..."

I have a solution and also a question. The solution to the problem (above question) is to move the Final Cut Pro library to the Movies folder and open it from there. But that is NOT an ideal solution, especially if one wants the FCP libraries stored on an external drive. I thought I found a solution to that at one point (e.g., security setup on external drives), but now I cannot find it, and my Chrome browser reset the browser history. So, my question is how to access the FCP Libraries without having to move them to Movies to fix the above problem...

Great questions, Tom.

I meant to include the original question. Here it is: Mac Compressor shows 'Missing Plugin' and… - Apple Community

I will take that into consideration, regarding Chrome.

As far as the "missing plugin." There isn't any missing plugin. Originally, prior to finding the solution, I spent days trying to find the solution. The problem was that that red screen (frame) would show, with the verbiage, "missing plugin," but I hadn't used any plugins. For example, I would use a clip of film and simply send it to the Compressor.

And, good eye in catching the export vs send. I caught that as I was hitting "submit." I copied the original question exactly as it appears. But, for my purposes, I was using "Send to Compressor." And, the "missing plugin" screen shows even before it starts to process in Compressor. But, if the Final Cut Pro file is on the main drive, specifically, say, in the "movies" folder, that problem does not occur.

And, as I mentioned, it will say "missing plugin" even if you haven't done any editing to the film footage at all (e.g., have not used any plugins).

Many of the other solutions out there talk about finding the film footage and relinking the footage and it is true, this particular error occurs in those cases too. It also does occur when there is a missing plugin. But, this particular circumstance is NOT those two cicumstances. This particular error shows up in the compressor when the film footage is where it is supposed to be (no errors in Final Cut Pro) and there are no plugins being used and the error (actually an incorrect error for all intents and purposes) shows up in compressor.

This is also why it is difficult to find the solution. You need to wade through all of the other solutions, which are valid solutions, for the other two scenarios. This particular scenario is less common, and henceforther that much more frustrating because of the lack of solutions. It is the one referenced in the other question, link at the beginning of this reply.

Thanks, Tom.

Do you have a link to the original question that might give more details of what's being done? Are you exporting a file from FCP and taking that to Compressor? Are you using Send to Compressor? Do you know what the missing plugin is?

You would be wise to remove Chrome completely and the keystone daemons the system library runs on the computer continuously.

Sometimes in these cases the plugin is a missing playback component that’s used by some camera files that may not work with Compressor.

When the library is on the external drive, how is the external drive formatted, and where is the media stored, as managed media inside the library or in an external location, on the same drive or another drive?

Thanks for sharing this. I’ll see if I can find instances that reproduce this.

That makes sense, Tom.

I was creating something in Motion just now, and the Compressor does not produce the same error, even though the files are not all in the "movies" folder. It seems to be more tolerant.

As far as location, it seems I recall (would need to go test it again) receiving the error no matter where the Final Cut Pro library was on the local hard drive. So, in other words, it happened even without an external hard drive. The only solution was to keep everything in the "movies" folder.

I noticed it happening around the time that security became a bigger issue in the OS (e.g., unable to download files elsewhere on the drive as easily...). Of course, security is a good thing. It is just that that was the timing of when the issue seemed to start. I'll have to test other locations on the local drive.

Thanks.
