South Africa
Summary
South Africa has the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa. It plays an important role in regional institutions such as the African Union and its presence in the G20 and the BRICS marks its status as an emerging global power. FCDO Southern Africa is increasingly working with South Africa on issues which have an impact beyond its borders, such as regional trade and climate change. From 2015, FCDO’s bilateral programme in South Africa will end, reflecting a new relationship between the UK and South Africa.
