UX Specifications (Fire Tablets)

Fire tablets have a common user interface. However, the device specifications vary by tablet, so the pixel dimensions of the user experience elements also vary.

Resolution

The following table shows the resolution for elements of the user interface in Fire OS 5, in device-independent pixels (dp). Note that the following screen elements are changing or are not included in Fire OS 5:

  • Carousel app icons are not included.
  • The Library Grid view is not included.
  • Favorite app icons are replaced by the standard app grid icons.
Status bar height (top) 24dp
Soft key bar height (when toolbar is visible) 48dp
Library list app icons 56dp x 56dp
Notifications app icon 24dp x 24dp
App icon 72dp x 72dp

Gestures

All Fire tablets support two-finger touch gestures, which Android supports on Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) and later. Except for Kindle Fire (1st Generation/2011) and Kindle Fire (2nd Generation/2012), Fire tablets detect 5 simultaneous points of touch and recognize the two-finger touch gestures. Your app can take advantage of the 5-point multi-touch capability and optionally implement custom touch gestures that use more than two fingers.

On any Fire tablet, the user interface for your app needs to respond to the following gesture patterns.

Gesture pattern Chrome Standard application Media Maps Images
Single-tap Invoke action Invoke action Hide/show chrome Invoke action Invoke action
Double-tap none Zoom none Zoom Zoom
Pinch/Pull none Zoom none Zoom Zoom
