‘The Afterparty’

Don’t you dare sleep on Apple TV+. Sure, we all know about Ted Lasso, but the streamer is also home to a host of critically-acclaimed comedies, including Mythic Quest, Schmigadoon!, and The Afterparty. Created by Christopher Miller, the eight-episode Rashomon-style whodunit centers on a murder mystery at a high school reunion. Each uniquely stylized episode features a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, with the various genres matching the storyteller’s distinct personalities. Starring Tiffany Haddish and featuring all-star performances from Sam Richardson and Ben Schwartz, The Afterparty exceeds even the loftiest of expectations as it delivers an uproarious, cleverly crafted murder mystery that’ll leave you wanting more. The first three episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+.

‘Edge Of Tomorrow’

Edge Of Tomorrow barely cracked $100 million at the domestic box office when it was released in June of 2014, despite its intriguing alien invasion sci-fi premise, outstanding special effects, and A-list stars (Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt). It was perceived as a failure, so much so that it was marketed with a wholly separate title (Live. Die Repeat.)... Read more

‘Riverdale’ Season 3, Episode 12 – “Chapter Forty-Seven: Bizarrodale”

When it comes to waiting out election results (and then processing them), the name of the game, at least for me, is escapism. ‘Pride and Prejudice’ (1995)

The BBC's 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice is quite simply one of the greatest series ever made. Hewing closely to the source material, the six-part miniseries perfectly blended the class and wit of Jane Austen's novel with an undercurrent of simmering sexual desire. Jennifer Ehle stars as Miss Elizabeth Bennet, a witty and beautiful heroine ... Read more

‘The Substance’

The Substance, which began streaming on Mubi last week, is not a subtle movie. But it is a loud, gross, and outrageous commentary on ageism and misogyny, wrapped up in a disgusting—and extremely entertaining—body horror package. Written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, this horror film first premiered at Cannes Film Festival... Read more
