‘I Saw the TV Glow’
When I say I Saw the TV Glow—now available to buy and rent on demand—left me absolutely gutted, I mean that as a compliment. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, this surreal horror-adjacent drama stars Justice Smith as Owen, a lonely, isolated kid growing up in the ’90s. When Owen meets a cool alternative girl named Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), she introduces him to a supernatural TV show called The Pink Opaque. As the years pass, it becomes clear that Owen doesn’t feel like the man society tells him he must be. Reality begins to distort, and Owen starts to question whether The Pink Opaque was more than just a TV show. It’s a moody, bizarre, and at times horrific psychological journey that speaks to the trans experience, and it’s easily one of the best films of 2024.
