‘Collateral’
Tom Cruise is one of the last of a dying breed: Movie stars. Cruise has starred in global blockbusters for over 30 years at this point, but this 2004 collaboration with director Michael Mann marks the only time in his career he’s been cast as the villain. Here, he stars as Vincent, a professional hit man traveling around L.A. as a passenger in a taxi cab driven by Jamie Foxx. There’s wonderful dialogue and some hair-raising action scenes (as you’ve come to expect from Mann’s ouevre), but this film is most notable for being one of the first major motion pictures to be shot primarily with hi-res digital cameras; I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen nighttime in Los Angeles captured in quite as stunning a manner as this before.
