CGMs

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are small devices that attach to your body and show your blood glucose (blood sugar) levels in real-time without the need for finger sticks. They do this by scanning a glucose sensor that reads interstitial fluid (fluid just under the skin). CGMs can help you prevent high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) or low glucose (hypoglycemia) events by alerting you when your glucose is rising or falling quickly or when you hit a high or low limit. CGMs also show trends in glucose levels that can help you and your diabetes care team learn about patterns that can be used to improve your treatment plan.

For example, let's say you're in the middle of a workout. Is your glucose level heading up or down? A glance at a CGM can let you know so you can take action if needed.

Several CGMs connect to insulin pumps and some pumps use CGM data to automatically adjust background (basal) insulin, deliver a correction (bolus) dose of insulin, or temporarily stop insulin delivery if glucose drops too low.
