Apple Intelligence is now available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac!

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How do I reinstall application accidentally deleted also no longer available on App Store?

If anyone can possibly help me I would be eternally most grateful!

in March this year I accidentally deleted my all-time favourite app Postale (or anyway, was opening it when it suddenly disappeared) and am my wits’ end as to how to get it back on my phone. I’ve had it there since 2016 and it was working perfectly in March this year.

(I cannot find any more modern equivalent that is in the same league or even close, so the help I need please is to retrieve it).

It does not appear either in my app library or - strangely - purchase history and is no longer in the App Store 😫

It was a free app to download and to use:

I have read that it is possible to restore an individual app through iTunes using the “apps” tab on any OSs before 12.7.

i still have my former (slow, but perfectly functioning!!) iMac (20” early 2009) with El Capitan (10.11.6.20). However, when I connect my iPhone 11 Plus (iOS 17.6.1) an error message on the computer advises me that I need to update the iPhone software for it to connect to iTunes.

When I try to do that, it gives me a message saying the software can’t be downloaded because is not available from the updates Server.

woe is me!! What oh what do I need to do to restore my belovèd Postale app, and why has it been suddenly removed from the App Store?

I have been unable to trace and contact the developer to check.

Please, please can you clever folk help me by whatever means are necessary to get it back.

Any help at all to that so-longed-for end would be just wonderful.

Thank You for any help you are able to provide.

Jackie

Thank you, Zachyy. Yes it has been removed from the App Store, I tried to restore it from there.

But as I would still have had it on my phone had I not so stupidly deleted it by mistake (actually I just opened it - so I’m really not sure exactly how/why it suddenly disappeared off the face of the planet!), surely I should be able to get back to restore the status quo? !

I’ll try (almost!) anything … it sounds like a good start might be to figure out how I can get my iPhone 11Plus to connect with my iTunes in El Capitan? Any ideas how please?? ,

thanks again for all help.

I don't know if this is the Postale app that you are talking about. Sounds like its developer pulled it in 2015 because – to relay a response quoted in that thread – "Apple made it very costly and difficult for small time developers like us to sell apps at the app store. Sorry about that. We just don’t have the budget. "

Is the Cartolina Postale app discontinued… - Apple Community

It looks like there is a "Popcarte : Carte postale" photo app in one of the App Stores. It's in the French language and requires iOS 14.0 or later (iPhone), iPadOS 14.0 or later (iPad), or an Apple Silicon Mac. It's "not verified for macOS" but the developers have not prohibited Apple Silicon Mac owners from downloading it and trying to run it.

I didn't try to download it, so I don't know if the Mac App Store would have told me "Sorry" (I'm not in France.)

The Mac App Store entry had a link to the developer's Web site:

Thank you for the suggestion.

Does anyone else out there have any other ideas please about how I can get the software updated to enable iTunes to connect to the phone, so that I can try the suggestion of restoring the app from the “app” tab of iTunes in a pre-12.7 version of the OS (apparently the facility to do that was removed after 12.7).

Thanks for any help.

I read that there is, but only with a (much - ie pre-OS12.7) older version of iTunes. Which I have, on an older iMac, but I cannot sync the iPhone to it to try …

The much older versions of iTunes will not work with the never versions of iOS. And even if you could use iTunes to connect to your current phone, iTunes can no longer download apps from the App Store for your iPhone. So it wouldn't have anything to transfer.

I'm really sorry but the app is gone. The only way to get it back would be if you could convince the developer to start offering it again.

Aren’t all apps you downloaded (free/purchased) supposed to be in your purchase history?

How could one that you’ve had for many years get removed from your purchase history?

Having said that … not only is it not in my purchase history any more, but nor could Apple see it as ever having been on their system!

And obviously it has been on both.

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that the entire app was stored in older versions iTunes (because pre-app store presumably).

But as you say I can’t connect it to the current iOS.

However … I also have an old iPhone (6S) which maybe I could try if it could connect with the older iTunes.

Yes, good idea, I am trying to contact the developer but so far have not heard anything back despite an impassioned plea!! Definitely The Best App Ever!!!

The world was a better place with it in it!

The app wasn't stored in the iTunes Application. It was stored on your hard drive.

I don't think it matters if you have an old phone. To the best of my recollection, you couldn't move apps from iPhones to you computer.

Sadly, there are a lot of apps I loved that stopped being supported. Many were created by small developers, one person shops and they were no longer able or interested in supporting an app. And larger developers sometimes decide that it's no longer cost-effective to keep supporting something. Or the developer just goes out of business.

Here's the bad news. After a certain year (think it was around 2018? I am not sure), Apple changed how the apps are installed/downloaded onto/into Apple devices. It used to work like any software; when you clicked on an app to install it, the actual app software was downloaded onto your computer, phone or ipad. After that year however, clicking on and installing any new app has NOT downloaded or installed the app itself. It merely installs the software portion needed to RUN the application. So, any app you've installed since then has NO BACKUP of the app itself. It's not possible as the app was never downloaded in the first place. All you get is permission to use the app, essentially, and a backup of the files you create while using it. So if and when that app vanishes from the App Store - poof - it's a terrible and permanent loss.

The situation got even tougher then. A couple of years ago, Apple removed iTunes for app installations altogether. If a person knew about this change beforehand, they might have tried to save the actual app installation files (.ipa files) onto their computer, and hope that if the apps disappear from the App store in the future, they could somehow re-install them. First though, a person had to be able to figure out how to FIND those files, as they are hidden, as well as figure out where to save them so that they won't be auto-deleted by iTunes or the lack of iTunes, and that can be located again by a connected phone or iPad. All of that is a bit of a techy process. Now though, there is no iTunes to facilitate re-installing these apps. I am not techy enough at all to know if it apps can be reinstalled without iTunes... I suspect not.

But here's the good news. Since you have an old computer that still has an old NOT-UPDATED iTunes (from around 3 years ago at least, right?), and you have apps showing up on the computer's iTunes Purchased list when the phone/ipad is not connected - yay! You have full versions of those applications living on your computer's hard-drive. To my knowledge, you must have iTunes still working in order to reinstall that app again on your phone, which you also have.

Sorry, there are still more hurdles to clear though. Every time Apple updates your iphone/ipad with a new OS, many aspects are changed. This sometimes means mobile apps have to be designed/developed in a specific way either to function on newer Apple devices or because Apple has their own protocol to follow. In turn, developers of older apps must update their code in them. Lots don't, for any of many reasons (too busy, app doesn't make money, too much work, too difficult of a coding level, and/or they just don't care about it anymore.) So even IF you reinstall an old app, there's a chance it won't open, will be buggy, or will crash. The older the app, the higher the likelihood.

So, if you are not too discouraged, and are willing to dig deep into learning  to reinstall an old app or can find an experienced tech-type person (who understands and knows advanced procedures beyond the standard ones found in Apple's Help files), there's still some hope. No guarantees though, sadly. I personally have hundreds of wonderful apps that have been removed from the App store, and will one day try to tackle this challenge on my own older Mac old iTunes backup too. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to it.

In the case of your phone not "speaking the same language" as your old iMac, you'd probably need to search the internet for a copy of that specific software your phone is asking for if Apple no longer has it available for download, but that is illegal in Apple world. Anytime you do, you do so against their advice, which voids any future device/computer repairs at all after that.)

Assuming you cannot find and install your missing "iphone to old computer translator", you'd have to locate the actual .ipa file for the app, and copy it into your Local Files folder on your phone (via Dropbox or and email or something.)  - but I will not recommend it because Apple's online posting Rules do not allow this.  You might then wonder if you could find a computer tech who knows how to get that file into a location where you could actually open and use the app. I am not sure if that is possible but again it is very very against Apple's online posting rules to suggest so I do not suggest that.  As a last resort, your only other option may be to find and use an older phone or ipad that has not been updated past ios 12 to install that app there (as per normal Apple procedures for that device). Note: apps that are much older than 2016, won't install  on any phoneor ipad thqt is has been updated pas ios 8..

I hope you find a solution!

The apps were originally stored on your hard-drive in a folder that only iTunes can access, assuming you backed up your apps to your computer and not just to the cloud.

Idris is correct that the very VERY oldest apps simply won't run on the latest ios even if you had a way to reinstall them. I am guesstimating, but I believe 2016 era apps don't fall into that category. In my own personal experience, the majority of 2016 and newer apps will still run. Some won't though.

Idris is also correct in that apps are not stored in iTunes. iTunes just accesses it, kind of like a 1950's traffic cop waving one car through.

Purchase History was of course originally designed to show every one of your purchases. As operating systems change, so does the content and purpose of the Purchase History list. At first, if an app you bought was no longer available, it still appeared in the list, but the little "download" icon was removed or grayed out. Later, i think I noticed some names of some apps were there but greyedout. Now some apps I purchased no longer appear at all in that list. I am not sure, but I think perhaps the apps listed without a download option attached to it were culled from the App Store because the apps were in 32-bit format (now considered antiquatec). They were not removed entirely because Apple was givibg them a chance to update their apps for future compatibility. There was some kind of deadline on that. Past that deadlne the app was deleted from the Store completely. I think they are also not found in the Purchase List if the developer themselves took their app out.So it is no longer an accurate purchase list but rather mostly just a list of the apps you purchased that are still available on the App Store today.

Interestingly, I just found that you can see a list of "Your orders" if you log in in the Aaple site with your Apple ID. Evety single one you bought is there, available or not! Hope that helps.

Please let me know if you make any headway with the iphone 6!

That's partially correct. I believe that old versions of iTunes made, or could make, local backups of apps on your Mac. Presumably that would allow restoring apps even if they disappeared from the App Store. This wasn't "because pre-app store". The apps had to come from the App Store – in one way or another – in the first place.

If you don't already have a local backup of the app in question, made by an old version of iTunes, then even if you could get an old version of iTunes to talk to your phone, there would be no local copy of the app to restore.

How do I reinstall application accidentally deleted also no longer available on App Store?
