AirTag questions

  1. Hello. I’m a Newbie to the AirTag World. I just purchased a 4-Pack. Now What ? Do I have to Register them; Charge them? Put them in the Deep Freeze?(kidding); Place One on my Keychain or Purse?; Put One in my CarryOn Luggage-Yikes!?; Maybe Attach One to a Pet?; Then Keep One as a Spare? I’m not certain IF they Expire, Lose their GPS ACCURACY? Should I get a NEW SET After a certain Time period? And IF there is a Registration process, is the Information STORED in that wonderful (or Not so wonderful) APPLE CLOUD? I’m sooo so many questions to Overload ANYONE, but H E L P - Many TIA.

To add your AirTag to the phone, simply follow these steps:

Add an AirTag in Find My on iPhone - Apple Support

A couple of points:

  • The AirTag, like other Bluetooth trackers, is not a GPS tracker. The only way you will get a location of the AirTag is if there is another iPhone nearby to transmit the location. This is much different than a GPS tracker.
  • Keychain - Sure
  • Purse - Sure
  • Luggage - Sure
  • Pets - No. Not only is there the risk of animals eating the AirTag, they are also not effective in locating the pet since another iPhone must be about 30 feet away, which is not typically the case for a lost pet.
  • There is no registration process other than adding them to your iPhone. This will add it to your account and you can also use iCloud to find it.
  • They do not expire or lose accuracy.
  • You only need to replace the battery when you see the battery low notification on your phone. The AirTag is designed to last more than a year with a new battery.

How to replace the battery in your AirTag - Apple Support

The are distinct differences between a Bluetooth tracker and a GPS tracker, the Bluetooth tracker is cheaper and has a longer battery life since it is not connecting to a satellite for location data.

Put them in the Deep Freeze?(kidding);

😜

Place One on my Keychain or Purse?;

Sure.

Put One in my CarryOn Luggage-Yikes!?;

If you want to.

Maybe Attach One to a Pet?;

Apple does not recommend or support using them on Pets.

Then Keep One as a Spare?

Sure

I’m not certain IF they Expire,

Nope

Lose their GPS ACCURACY?

Nope. GPS will be based on Apple devices around it, not on the AirTag itself as it has no GPS module. Apple devices will pickup on the AirTag's bluetooth beacon and report location back to Apple servers. No personal information is exchanged or exposed in any way by AirTag.

Should I get a NEW SET After a certain Time period?

Not really, unless you've lost the 4 in the pack.
