Old, deleted photos returned in iPhone post iOS 17 update

It was an issue that happened to some users after updating to iOS 17.5. Apple then issued another update to iOS 17.5.1 that was supposed to fix the issue as noted here:

This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted.

This was a known bug that occurred in iOS 17.5. Please update to iOS 17.5.1. This was caused by a database corruption that Apple patched in iOS 17.5.1. Basically what happened was photos stored in the Files app weren’t properly deleted and in iOS 17.5 it tried to reindex them within the Photos app.

It is important to note (despite false rumors online), your information is safe and protected and does not (and will not) appears on old sold off devices that follow Apple’s recommendations for wiping the device.
