Screentime request not triggering notification on parent device.

When my child makes a request for more time, he uses an iPad 9 running iPad OS 17.x.

My iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 17.x does not notify me. If I navigate to settings>screentime>child, I can see the pending request. But why don’t I get a notification?

We have had this issue as well and it is very frustrating! We have two kids with Apple devices and are about to add a third, and until now we had been very happily using the screen time limits with ease. I wish they would make it an option to receive either notifications or iMessage, rather than forcing iMessage on us.

Also, could we have more options for time to allow than 15 minutes, an hour, or all day? Movies are ~2 hours long, TV episodes are often 22 minutes, why can’t we have a toggle to set exactly the amount of time we want?

I was able to resolve this. This is due to send requests being sent through iMessage in iOS 17.

You need to make sure your child has iMessage activated on their device with their own email address.

As a parent, you need to make sure you can receive iMessage via your phone number AND the email associated with your Apple ID.

Once that is done, the notifications will show up within iMessage.

After getting frustrated, I actually like this better since you can see the history of requests. I just wish there was better documentation available from Apple.

Hi Apple, The iMessage chat group where the requests for time used to appear is still there. Chat history and all. We can all go to that chat group on our devices, and we can type and send messages to each other in that group. So the communication works. But my child's requests for more time are no longer sent into that chat group. They are not sent at all, anywhere, it seems. It was working just fine in iOS 17, until one day it suddenly stopped working (around the time we all upgraded to 17.3).

Hey there Pho Da Nguyen,

We'd like to help by ruling out some basics, along with learning more about what's happening:

  1. When did this start, and are your Screen Time notification settings enabled? You can check those settings in your iPhone under Settings > Notifications > Screen Time.
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone and Restart your iPad
  3. You mentioned both devices are using iOS/iPadOS 17, but the latest version for both would be iOS/iPadOS 17.0.3. You can verify this within each device under Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad

Cheers!

So at the moment, we cannot receive notifications from Screen time requests, unless we add our email address to the iMessage system, in which case the requests arrive in iMessage.

Is this *another* attempt from Apple to force us to add our email to the iMessage system?

They try so hard, and some times, after updates, the email has "mysteriously" been activated in iMessage. It is a mess!
