South of Mammoth Lakes, CA.  Ref on wikipedia.  I have it from several incredible sources that the mammoth are best viewed in the evenings when they come down from the mountains to drink, but you have to be well hidden and cover your scent.  This is one of the most remote areas to visit in all California. Go visit.
