Ronald Darby: 'The sky is the limit' for Broncos' secondary

After adding three talented cornerbacks to the roster this offseason, the Denver Broncos’ secondary looks like one of the best units in the league, at least on paper.

There might be some early growing pains, though, as the team’s new arrivals gel with the incumbent defensive backs. Newly signed cornerback Ronald Darby has high expectations for the secondary despite an expected learning period for the new arrivals.

“We can do great things,” Darby said on May 27. “We just have to keep getting to know each other and going out there.

“Communication is key along with knowing our job and knowing where to line up and knowing each other’s tendencies. Once we get all that down, the sky is the limit for this group. We have a lot of vet players and a lot of young, talented players. We can all run and fly around.”

Some of the team’s carryover defensive backs — such as safeties Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson — have been helping the new defensive backs acclimate to the new scheme.

“We’ve got ‘K-Jack’ back there,” Darby said. “Simmons — all of them know what they’re doing, so they alert me on a lot of things. [They] line me up where I need to be, and they help me. Anything I need help with, they know it right away.”

Once the wrinkles are ironed out, Denver’s secondary will be poised to have a big year, perhaps even their best season since the “No Fly Zone” era.
