Ronald Darby on Broncos' secondary: 'We can definitely be the best'

The Denver Broncos signed cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller during free agency earlier this offseason, then they selected Patrick Surtain II in the first round of the NFL draft. Those three defensive backs now join a secondary that already included talented cornerbacks Bryce Callahan and Michael Ojemudia.

Denver also has one of the best safety duos in the league in Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson. With so much talent, is it safe to say the Broncos could have the best secondary in the NFL this season?

“Of course,” Darby said after practice on June 16. “With the experience and the vets we have and the front we have, we can definitely be the best if not top two or top three for sure …. that pass rush is getting back there [which will help]. We have guys that know what they’re doing.

“[The] communication is going well and it’s still early. We still have a lot of time to get to know each other a lot more. We can be really special.”

Denver won Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season thanks in large part to its pass rush and “No Fly Zone” secondary. It might be too optimistic to call the Broncos title contenders this season, but — on paper — the secondary appears poised to have similar production to the 2015 squad.
