The magnetic sensor available in this category mostly bases its operation on the use of a reed switch hidden under the housing. A reed switch is a circuit element that closes and opens upon close contact with an object having a magnetic field. Such a device has contacts covered with a thin layer of very conductive material (e.g. tungsten or gold), which is selected depending on the specific purpose. Reed switches are divided into two types. Less popular - remanent - are those that, under the influence of a magnetic field, change their state to the opposite one, but after moving away the object emitting the magnetic field, the state remains the same (without introducing any force or energy into the system). Subsequent contact with a magnetic field of opposite polarity will cause a change in state. Non-remanence reed switches are much more often used - they operate by maintaining one of the states only during close contact with an object emitting a magnetic field. State changes involve closing and opening the circuit - for example, after removing the magnet from near the reed switch, the circuit will be interrupted (opening the window). Information about such an event may be registered in the connected microcontroller, which will react to it, for example by activating an alarm signal. Every reed relay - electromagnetic - works in a similar way.
