Wine's third Highland historical romance (after Highland Vixen) takes readers back to 16th-century Scotland and another strong-minded heroine. Katherine Carew, abandoned illegitimate daughter of an English lord, is a marked woman. The despotic Earl of Morton orchestrates her forced marriage to war chief Marcus McPherson; when the plot fails, she's unable to return to her former life, and she causes considerable unease among the Scots because of her English blood. In addition, Katherine flouts social mores by covertly training as a warrior and learning how to ride a horse. Disguised as a young man, she embarks on a late-night gallop and is briefly captured by Rolfe McTavish, who discerns her true gender and finds her very attractive. Later, the hated Gordon clan abducts Katherine and Rolfe vows to save her. When the escape leads to Katherine again becoming Morton's political pawn, Rolfe tells her that marrying him is her only route to safety. But even as their passion builds, Katherine wrestles over whether the hasty union should last. Wine's skillful pacing and thoughtful characterizations shine, and her proto-feminist heroine is a delight.

I love Mary Wine's historical romance stories and this one did not disappoint. The characters were fun, witty and strong. Katherine might of been born English but she was as strong as any highland lass. Rolfe MacTavish didn't know what he was getting himself into when he decided to teach Katherine a lesson for her hellion ways. Taking her home to hold her for ransom but his father the laird has only a title in mind and sends word to the kings keeper Morton. Knowing his son wants Katherine he will prove he has control and send Rolfe to deliver Katherine to her fate with the Morton. He underestimates Rolfes need for Katherine and his strength to stand up to his father to have what he want and he wants Katherine above all. That is if they servive Mortons rath.
I loved the ending of this book. I can't say more for it will give to much away.

Vulgar language!
I loved the heroine, Katherine, strong women in romance novels are are always a plus. I was intrigued with the hope that Morton would lose his power and he did. Rolfe was an honorable man that knew what he wanted and their declaration of love for each other wasn’t long in coming. I was definitely enthralled with the clans being drawn together in a common goal against a common foe. I will not purchase another book by this writer. I grew up on historical romance novels and the pioneer, Ms Kathleen E. Woodiwiss was my favorite of all time; the vulgar language in this one left a bad taste in my mouth. At my age, I can’t entertain myself on it-especially the f-word used in conjunction with my Savior Jesus Christ! My friends and I will not gather to discuss this one.
