The Auburn Tigers (1-1) are entering week three in a state of flux following a shockingly putrid loss in week two at the hands of California. With Payton Thorne coming off his worst game as a Tiger, it is possible, although unlikely, head coach Hugh Freeze makes a change under center heading into week three. Still, Auburn heads into this game with a better 2024 resume than its week three opponent New Mexico. The Lobos lost their home opener to FCS program Montana State, then followed that game up with a blowout 61-39 blowout loss to Arizona.

The terrible resume gives the Lobos next to no chance at upsetting the Tigers, as ESPN FPI currently gives Auburn a 93.4 chance to earn a victory on Saturday. Oddsmakers feel the same way, as BetMGM has Payton Thorne and company favored by 28 points this weekend. While Auburn wasn’t nearly as big of a favorite as they were a weekend ago, the Tigers still showed they are prone to upsets at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Here are five ways the Lobos could go into Auburn and secure their first win of the 2024 season.

Following an extremely impressive freshman campaign in which he led Auburn golf to a national championship, sophomore Tiger Jackson Koivun flashed his dominance again, taking home the individual victory in his first tournament of the season on Tuesday.

Koivun shot 9-under par over the course of three days at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Ohio, including a 6-under par 63 in the opening round. Koivin’s dominance helped propel his team to a second place (+2) finish in the team portion of the tournament, behind only No. 6 Virginia (-2) in the field. The second place finish ended Auburn’s historic streak of seven-straight tournament wins to end last season.

Unfortunately for Auburn, the team loss will likely drop the defending champions from their current No. 1 ranking. Still, Koivun’s dominant outing shows he can carry this Tiger team to at least another opportunity at defending its 2023-2024 National Championship.

Koivun and teammates Brendan Valde, Josiah Gilbert, Carson Bacha, and Reed Lotter will look to start a new first-place streak when they travel to Texas to take part in the Valero Texas Collegiate next Saturday.

As for the star sophomore, Koivun now has 3 individual wins under his belt and should finish with many more by the end of his second collegiate campaign.

Auburn’s soccer team has continued to dominate opponents to start the fall, as the Tigers are now 7-0 to start the young season. While the Tigers dropped their first two preseason matches in early August, they’ve gone undefeated in the regular season, scoring 28 times while unfathomably not allowing a single ball to touch the back of their own net.

The historic start has not only led the Tigers to a consensus top 7 ranking among the polls, but also given plenty of starts All-Conference honors through the first month of the season. The latest Tiger to receive an award is forward Olivia Woodson, who scored the lone goal of Auburn’s most recent win over No. 17 Ohio State.

Woodson, who is only a sophomore, managed four shots in the win. Two of those shots were on goal, accounting for nearly half (5) of her teams total SOG in the game. The Richmond, VA native scored the game-winner in the 49th minute of action.

Auburn’s leading scorer this season, Woodson now has 6 goals in 7 games. She has managed multiple shots in all but two contests, while she has scored twice in two. Woodson’s 13 shots on goal also lead the Tigers, while her 13 points this season are good for fourth most in the entire SEC.

Woodson and the Tigers will look to keep the good times rolling when they host Old Dominion (5-2) on Alumni Night this Friday at 6:30 CST. Another win could vault the Tigers into the top 5 on most polls as they head into SEC play on September 19.

Former Auburn running back Tank Bigsby set a career-high in rushing yards, second-year defensive lineman Derick Hall hauled in his first career sack, Jamel Dean and K.J. Week two of the 2024 college football season is officially complete, and as the nation looks ahead to what will happen in week three, a new version of the Associated Press Poll was released.

Following a Auburn’s highly disappointing 21-14 loss at the hands of Cal on Saturday, it finds itself away from the AP Poll entirely after receiving votes for the last two weeks. The same is true for the Tigers’ fate in the US LBM Coaches Poll, no longer receiving votes.

This week’s edition of the rankings shows 11 teams from the SEC being mentioned. Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and South Carolina are all receiving votes after wins in week two. Of the eight teams in the Top 25, six of them are in the top seven with Georgia, Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss, Missouri and Tennessee making marks across the country. Oklahoma (No. 15) and LSU (No. 16) round out the conference in this poll.

According to these current rankings, Auburn is set to play six of the conference’s 11 teams that are at a part of these rankings, with the first one being against the Oklahoma Sooners on Sept. 28 in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

While this weekend did not go as planned for the current Auburn football team, a future Tiger made history on Friday night. Four-star running back commit Alvin Henderson had himself the game of his life in Elba’s 80-78 loss against McKenzie high school, rushing for non touchdowns and three two-point conversions in the loss.

Henderson’s 9 rushing touchdowns tied the all-time Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) record for rushing scores in a game, while his 60 total points set the AHSAA record for most points scored by any player in a game. In a contest that produced the Alabama record for most points (158), the Auburn commit was the clear star. He rushed the ball a grand total of 41 times, racking up 389 yards (9.5 YPC) on the ground in the loss, and now has 895 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns in just three games this season.

While Henderson is unlikely to lead Elba to a state championship after a 1-2 start to the 2024 campaign, the 5-foot-9, 200-pound back has a chance to break his record-setting rushing totals of 3.523 yards and 61 touchdowns from a year ago.

With Auburn’s 2024 season taking a unfortunate turn after a week two loss to California, Tiger fans should at least be optimistic about the prospect of having Henderson lead the backfield as soon as 2025. We’ll see if he can break his single-game rushing record as Elba’s season rolls into the fall.

The Auburn Tigers are coming off an extremely disconcerting loss in week two against ACC opponent California. Hugh Freeze’s offense came into week two riding a high of scoring 70+ points against Alabama A&M, but could not muster anything of note following an early scripted-drive touchdown. The effort was so sub-par that questions surrounding Payton Thorne’s status as the starting quarterback have risen, and the Tigers chances of going bowling this season seem to be at an all-time low.

Auburn’s week two loss included 5 offensive turnovers (4 interceptions), just 286 offensive yards from scrimmage, and a below-average defensive effort that led Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza to pass for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns on a near 70% completion percentage. The total breakdown by the Tigers caused them to slide heavily in ESPN FPI, as the ranking now lists Auburn at No. 25 overall, 9 spots below its week one ranking.

The FPI ranks each college football team by a variety of factors; Strength of record, strength of schedule, offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency, and overall efficiency.

Here is where Auburn ranks in each category ahead of the Tigers’ week three matchup with New Mexico at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The Auburn Tigers came into week two off of possibly their most efficient win in program history. With expectations sky-high following a 70-point beatdown of FCS opponent Alabama A&M, Auburn laid an egg in a brutal 21-14 loss to Cal at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The loss was not only ugly but alarming enough to create doubts over quarterback Payton Thorne’s status as the starter under center for the remainder of the season. Head coach Hugh Freeze has been cryptic with the media following the loss, but has stayed true to the sentiment that his team still remains far away from competing with the better half of the SEC. While Auburn’s leading man has stayed true to his word that Payton Thorne is the best option to lead his offense, it would be hard to imagine a world where the senior leads this team for the remainder of the season.

The fact of the matter is that Auburn’s week two loss as a 12.5-point favorite was on the whole team. While the quarterback did not play well, offensive line issues and defensive breakdowns allowed the Golden Bears to stay in a game they had no business competing in. Auburn’s struggles led Tuscaloosa News’s SEC writer Chase Goodbread to drop the Tigers all the way down to No. 14 in his rankings, ahead of only Arkansas (15), and Mississippi State (16).

Goodbread’s analysis echoes that of many Auburn fans, as he simply amplifies the fact Hugh Freeze’s offense still has not improved since he took over on the Plains a year ago. Even with a win this week against New Mexico (0-2) Goodbread is unlikely to move the Tigers up his list unless the Tigers show drastic improvement, possibly behind a new signal-caller.

Currently, the top five consists of Georgia (1), Texas (2), Tennessee (3), Ole Miss (4), and Alabama (5). As for the basement of the rankings, Auburn has now fallen behind South Carolina (11), and Vanderbilt (13).

It is common for SEC quarterbacks to receive criticism following a bad game. However, Auburn fans are getting creative with how they express frustration.

Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne was a guest on the daily show The Next Round on Tuesday, where he discussed some of the criticism he has received following Auburn’s loss to California last Saturday when he threw four interceptions. He says he is hearing Auburn fans’ true thoughts in every imaginable form.

“Obviously everyone says just don’t listen to it and all that. Sometimes, that’s easier said than done because, in today’s world, they come at you from all different angles,” Thorne said Tuesday. “You hear it verbally. That’s probably the least one. But, just walking down the street, you hear it sometimes. And then, obviously the social media, they hit you on Venmo, all types of stuff.”

Fans requesting money from college football players via Venmo is a creative, yet insane way to express displeasure. Thorne confirmed with the hosts of the show that fans indeed request money from Thorne instead of generously send some to him.

“They’re definitely not sending cash,” Thorne said. “It’s funny. When they lose money, they want their money back but when they win money on a parlay, no one’s ever sent me any of the money.”

How will Thorne bounce back? He says that he will focus on what’s next, which is the New Mexico Lobos. Thorne and the Tigers square off with New Mexico on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn’s loss to California was unexpected; the proof can be seen in the rankings.

The Tigers dropped out of top-25 consideration in the US LBM Coaches Poll following Saturday’s 21-14 loss to the Golden Bears. Auburn was outside of the top 25 of USA TODAY Sports’ weekly re-rank before the game but is now on a downhill slide.

Paul Myerberg of USA TODAY Sports dropped his weekly rankings after week two’s action and has listed Auburn among the biggest drops. Auburn, who began last week at No. 40, has slid down 22 places to No. 62. On the contrary, Cal has jumped 21 spots to No. 58 following the stunning road win.

While Auburn’s fall is quite drastic, it was not the biggest of the week. This week’s title belongs to Kentucky, who dropped a 31-6 home contest to South Carolina last Saturday. Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Wyoming, and Jax State join Auburn and Kentucky in falling at least 20 places in Myerberg’s rankings.

Auburn’s next opponent, New Mexico, remains at No. 129 after losing 61-39 to Arizona over the weekend. The Lobos will enter Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 0-2 record.
