Editors’ Notes
Have you ever written on magic paper? We have. You might know Moleskine for its world-famous notebooks: pages of creamy paper that feel amazing under your pen. Flow by Moleskine brings that experience to your iPhone and iPad.
Great note taking app that could be even better...
I love the simple yet effective idea behind Flow and it’s very well executed. For my use, it’s the perfect app for note taking as it allows for sprawling documents that can change at any time from written notes to doodles, sketches, plans and whatever else I need.
I feel there are some key features missing (auto shapes, vertical scroll, image import etc.) but luckily the feedback community and, crucially, the developer response appears to be very active so hopefully in time Flow will develop.
Personally, though the price isn’t an issue, I’d have preferred an outright cost to buy the app rather than a subscription but I can see the reasons behind going for a subscription model.
It’s lack of features makes it useless to me.
As an interior designer I was excited to see whether Flow could work well as my everyday design journal - a place where I collate ideas, inspiration and just generally make notes. I use procreate for artwork, and Flow could never replace that, but I thought it might replace my use of Notability. Sadly, I quickly found out that you can’t import photos and pictures, making it entirely useless in my case. It also doesn’t make auto-shapes, which I’d miss. It doesn’t use text boxes either. It’s such a shame, as it’s a beautiful app - I do prefer many things about it to Notabilty - the horizontal scrolling for one. The way you choose colour I like. The way you set up your personal pens and tools is lovely. But it’s just so lacking in features - honestly, I can’t understand who there target market is meant to be. There are better note taking apps, and there are obviously much better art apps. So it falls between two stalls, while trying to charge a higher price.
