Best news app on the App Store

The New York Times iPhone app has come a long way and I can now say confidently it is the best I have seen from any single publication on the App Store. By keeping up their exceptional journalistic standards (for the most part) and not creating false premises with click bait article headlines the times provide a tremendous source of knowledge to the public in a clear and concise manner. Their app’s audio features are also highly useful, their games very stimulating, and their download feature reliable. I only hope more journalistic institutions can follow the example they set in their coverage and their digital experience.

Love the NYT but not this App

I’ve been a subscriber for a couple of years now, and although I love the NYT, this app just isn’t up to scratch. This is surprising, considering how good the actual journalism is and that it’s probably the most well renowned newspaper in the world.. I really wish it was easier to navigate between articles, and not have to press the ‘<‘ button about 15 times every time I want to get back to the Home Page. I also think it should be easier to search by subtopic, and just generally look through the different sections. It almost seems like it’s a square space version of an app… with really basic navigation capabilities. I’m from Australia, so I’ve never actually read a hard copy paper from them, but I’m assuming there are regular sections/ features… it makes sense to me to have those headers laid out very clearly for people to navigate to. You should be able to search for key terms, major features, journalists and news topics. There should be a “front page” button on the page so you can go back to the home page after reading a piece. Also.. why are there two share buttons at the bottom right.. one looks like a present and the other a regular share icon. I feel like someone just threw this app together and haven’t bothered to improve it, it’s a shame because it doesn’t meet the standard of the paper.

Unfortunately, biased.

It’s a sad day when a publication that has had so much respect, gets a low one star review, from a hopeful yet continually disappointed pundit. Your coverage of the Middle East has been detrimentally lacking. And biased. You regularly omit *critical* pieces of the puzzle, leaving readers and viewers with a distorted picture of that region. It is not the West, and the incessant attempts at observing it through a Western lens has infantilised its inhabitants. Then there’s the fact, this and other publications have contributed to and played down radicalisation in the West, in support of terrorism, this endangers us all. The long term implications, your current content creators will probably not be privy to and judging by their current behaviour, if they do see the downstream effects, they’ll likely shrug. Then the ultimate betrayal of journalism (and an antisemitic act), when a woke NYT journalist shares the private information of 600 Jewish creatives and academics, without their consent, with a subject the journalist was interviewing, the content landing almost immediately into the hands of people who are relentlessly attacking Jewish people. We keep waiting to see grown ups in the room. When that day comes I’ll come back here and alter my review.
