Joplin 4+

I used to use Zim for 5+ years as my personal wiki and note taking app. Amassing over 1000 notes. However due to its lack of easy mobile access on IOS, and me being less at my desk, I finally looked at alternatives. I spent many hours over the last week reviewing endless online discussion threads, product info and testing. Joplin gets the win 🏆 I use Linux and IOS. A few notable Joplin highlights: * Lightning fast full text search- including attachments 😃. Some note taking apps don’t search attachments 🤷‍♂️ * Excellent performance - I think the SQLite architecture helps here. * Can use an external editor which as a bonus allows you to open multiple notes at once for side by side editing, which is good for merging etc. * Excellent add on plugins - some that I use allow for adding links to any other note, add back links, contents outline, and bookmarking notes. * Versioning built in - default is 90 days of versions 🎉 * Syncing is there for many platforms, such as Dropbox, Onedrive, iCloud, weddav, Nextcloud,…, or subscribe to Joplin sync service for hands free syncing. * Import and export options from/to standard mark down and more. No vendor lock-in 👍🏼

The IOS app is not yet feature par with the desktop version, but for searching, reading and editing notes it is 100% fine. Stop wasting your time elsewhere, Joplin is what you need.

My requirements were for an app to capture thoughts and research for later reference (the Zettelkasten idea), and that it sync privately across my Macbook and iPad. I have other apps and processes for To-dos and journals.

Syncing via webDAV on my server, Joplin is fast, easy, private, and sufficient. It appears well supported.

I investigated a wide variety of alternatives. This app looked to fit best, and, after trying some others, is actually doing the job.

I discovered this app through the privacy tools website and it’s fantastic. I’m used to compromising in order to maintain privacy by using free and open source tools, but the simplicity and feature set in this app makes it even better than paid rivals. End-to-end encryption, storage on your own cloud storage, and completely open source. Fantastic!
