Mali
The humanitarian context in Mali remains marked by a complex crisis that derives from a volatile security situation, exacerbated by structural vulnerabilities, socio-economic challenges, as well as climate change.
Some 7.1 million people, or 32 per cent of the current population, are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection. The situation is particularly dire in conflict-affected areas in northern and central Mali, where access constraints and multiple displacement exacerbate vulnerability.
In 2023, aid agencies received about 30 per cent of the US$750 million they needed – or about $225 million. With these funds, they assisted more than 1.8 million people across the country.
The number of refugees, returnees, stateless persons and asylum-seekers is 66,700. An increased severity of needs has been identified and new humanitarian hotspots have been identified. 700,000 people are acutely food insecure and 2.8 million are under pressure. By 2024, an estimated 1.3 million people will be acutely food insecure.
The 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan estimates that by 2024, 7.1 million people in Mali will be in need of assistance, including 23 per cent of women and 54 per cent of children. Of these, 4.1 million will be covered by the humanitarian response.
The UN and partners need just over US$700 million to assist more than 4.1 million people across the country in 2024. These efforts will complement response activities implemented by national authorities.
The humanitarian community will focus its efforts on strictly humanitarian needs aimed at saving lives and alleviating suffering for people affected by recurrent shocks, including violence and conflict, health emergencies, drought and floods, as well as improving inclusive, timely and adequate access to quality basic services for those affected in accordance with fundamental rights and standards.
