Joined September 6, 2007
Currently on day 4 of my second juice feast. My last one was 30 days... about 3 years ago; so don't get too impressed ;-)

I am a foodie. Well, well versed in nutritional science. I am in favor of ALL life-giving nutrient dense food preparations and ingredients. I believe adhering to a philisophically bound foodie-dogma can be dangerous - it is better to adhere to truth, and let science tell us how to eat. I praise Dr. Cousens for his integrity and willingness to do this.

Science tells me that the freezer and dehydrator can be BOTH our best friend AND our worst enemy in terms of what they do to our food enzymes.

Science tells me that certain food preparations and spices should be used because of their incredible medicinal value, even though they are not raw. Like turmeric.

Science tells me certain foods and food preparations can be beneficial for what they provide, otherwise lacking in our diet, even though they are not raw. Like seaweeds, miso, maple syrup, and tea.

Science tells me that live foods are still healthy even though they are not raw. Like Kombucha.

Science tells me that not all foods are healthy when eaten raw. Like potatoes.

Science tells me that certain foods are more bioavailable cooked, and yet have more enzymes raw. Foods like carrots. It would make sense to eat these both ways and reap the maximum benefits.

Science tells me that without supplementation, this diet isn't sustainable for 85% of people. This means I will need to re-up on the occassional egg, the sublingual supplement, or the shot.

Science tells me that high raw low animal is best, that cooked without raw isn't wise, that lightly cooked, or steamed is still okay, and that cooked isn't magically turning into actual poison, even if it's not completely nourishing my need for enzymes.

Now on to the philosophy....

I do not believe the percentage of RAW in a person's diet defines that person's righteousness or acceptability. I believe that there is room in this community for those who like a steamed yam with their dinner salad, for those who feel best on a fruitarian diet, for those who are or are not vegan, for those who are mostly cooked and for those who are completely raw. Even for those who want to experiment with a raw recipe or two while not committing to the whole uncooked diet.

I believe embracing one another in our places of agreement is the healthiest and most sustainable way to work toward making a significant whole food movement the new Standard in Diet, in America and elsewhere.

I am vehemently opposed to orthorexia.
