School uniforms

All children and young people should be able to attend school feeling comfortable, confident and ready to learn.

Decisions about a school’s uniform or clothing policy are the responsibility of individual schools. We have published guidance on school uniform and clothing to help with those decisions.

The guidance sets out key considerations to ensure pupil comfort, freedom and happiness. It includes advice on encouraging schools to develop and implement their own affordable and sustainable policies that recognise the individual needs of all pupils.

We  have also published the following versions of the guidance:

The guidance has been supported by a school uniform working group and informed by consultation and engagement.

Some families may be eligible for help with school clothing costs. Find out more about help with the cost of school clothing at the mygov.scot website.
