Medr is responsible for funding and regulating the tertiary education and research sector in Wales.
For the first time, the tertiary education and research sector is managed and co-ordinated by one arm’s length body of the Welsh Government.
New – Strategic Plan 2025-2030From 1 August 2024, Medr will regulate institutions, and fund:
- further education
- higher education, including research and innovation
- apprenticeships
- adult community learning
- local authority maintained school sixth forms.

Apprenticeships allow learners at all levels to be able to gain qualifications while earning a wage, and normally take 1 to 4 years to complete.

Information from tertiary education providers is used to calculate funding allocations, monitor progress, inform policy, and publish statistics on the tertiary sector.
