This Post-Impressionist French painter was one of the artists who had the greatest influence on 20th century painting. He was highly respected by the artists of his own generation, particularly by Picasso.
His still-lifes with apples are famous, inspired by those of Zurbaran. In them, a degree of geometry began to appear in his objects, and he painted spheres of colour that were to sow the seeds of Cubism.
In this portrait of a peasant, Cézanne still retains the light and style of Impressionism in the landscape in the background, but in the male figure geometric forms are already apparent. The full volume of the faceless figure, is suggestive of several of the artistic movements that were to develop over the 20th century.
