BOYNTON, Charles B., a House Chaplain; born in West Stockbridge, Berkshire County, Mass., June 12, 1806; attended Stockbridge Academy, Stockbridge, Mass.; attended Williams College, Williamstown, Mass.; ordained by the Columbia, N.Y., presbytery in October 1840; railroad president; farmer; court justice, Berkshire County, Mass.; member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives; professor, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.; pastor in a church in Housantonic, Mass., 1840–1845; pastor in a church in Lansingburg, N.Y., 1845–1846; pastor, Vine Street Church, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1846–1856, 1873–1877; pastor, South Church, Pittsfield, Mass., 1856–1857; pastor in a church in Washington, D.C., 1865–1869;president, Howard University, Washington, D.C., 1867; pastor, Assembly's Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C., 1869–1873; elected Chaplain of the United States House of Representatives to the Thirty-ninth and to the succeeding Congress (December 5, 1865–March 3, 1869); died on April 27, 1883, Cincinnati, Ohio.
