Have you ever created a GUI application that uses XAML? Starting with WPF, there are now various XAML platforms such as Avalonia, OpenSilver, and MAUI.
These XAML platforms are especially recommended to use MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) architecture together, but since MVVM has many dialects due to different interpretations and is not a completely unified and robust architecture, you may face difficulties when trying to use it.
Epoxy designed MVVM not as an architecture, rather as a kind of tool, with a gentle learning curve to help beginners understand MVVM, ease of introduction, and a set of functions that are simple, independent, and easy to reuse.
Of course, Epoxy is not a beginner-only library. Its simplicity means that it is flexible and applicable in a variety of environments.(Epoxy has been used in several business applications, although not publicly).
The following is a list of Epoxy's features:

- We don't do complete commonality; only Epoxy has a common structure as much as possible, and other parts are dependent on each environment to avoid being the greatest common divisor.
- Each function is "unrelated" to each other. Since they are independent, they can be freely combined.
- Friction-free for combination other framework libraries such as ReactiveProperty and etc.
Install the NuGet package that corresponds to your target GUI framework. There are many Epoxy packages available, but you only need the following specific packages for the XAML platform you are using:

Note: Epoxy.Templates
used to contain template project definitions, but is discontinued as of 1.15.0. With this change, the Template Wizard in Visual Studio has also been discontinued too. Don't worry, you don't need to rely on a wizard to get started with Epoxy!

: Describes the user interface in XAML and write binding expressions to theViewModel

NOTE: There are many theories about the architecture of MVVM. It is a good idea to brush up on the design without aiming for perfection from the start. Epoxy is designed to be improved step by step.

The "View" in MVVM is defined in XAML as the appearance and structure of the display. Dynamic control processing (any code fragmets) is not described here. This includes the placement, colors, fonts, etc. of each control.
The ListBox
control has the ability to display a group of items with the same appearance side by side.

The role of "ViewModel" is to write code to control each control defined in XAML to have dynamic behavior.
Why not unify the View and ViewModel implementations, as "Windows Forms" used to do? There are many reasons for this question, but the practical problem is that it is difficult to display and control different contents for multiple elements, such as a ListBox
using only code.
To solve this problem, there is a feature called "Data binding", and it is fair to say that the MVVM architecture was invented to solve the problem with data binding.
In the ListBox
example, the display is automatically updated so that the contents of the Items
collection defined in the ViewModel correspond to each element of the display on a one-to-one basis. Thus:
- How the View side should display each element. The placement, colors, fonts, images and their processing, etc. are specified in XAML.
- The ViewModel side adds, deletes, or reorders each element, and generates text strings and image data.
The ViewModel side can concentrate on.
The following is an implementation of the ViewModel class in which the display and control are completely separated. Complete separation means that no code-behind is written in the View class.

The common code to access The Cat API is implemented in the EpoxyHello.Core
project.
It does not depend on either WPF, Avalonia, OpenSilver and MAUI assemblies and is completely independent.
By eliminating dependencies in this way, we can achieve commonality for multi-platform support.
However, for small-scale development, you can place the Model
implementation in the same project as the ViewModel
implementation
(separating them eliminates the possibility of unintentional dependencies).

Since the Model implementation does not directly manipulate the user interface fragments,
it can isolate task contexts with task.ConfigureAwait(false)
annotation to improve performance.
The following is a list of Epoxy features, each of which is independent and can be used in any combination (e.g., inheritance of the base class is not required, as is often the case with ViewModel).

Although it is not described in detail in the following sections, Epoxy is designed with asynchronous processing in mind throughout its functions.
- As a rule, method signatures use asynchronous (
ValueTask
return). - Potentially misused overloads are absent or located only in the
Epoxy.Synchronized
namespace. Synchronized namespace. - Overloads that use
Task
are separated into theEpoxy.Supplemental
namespace. This is to reduce the possibility of accidentally usingTask
instead ofValueTask
.
When the ViewModel
attribute is applied, PropertyChanging
and PropertyChanged
are automatically implemented at compile time. Also, the auto-implemented property setter handles these events so that they occur automatically. This function called ViewModel injector.
In the previous implementation of Epoxy (<0.15), it was forced to inherit from the ViewModel
base class, but by using this attribute, any class can be made into a ViewModel without any depends.
Also, if you apply the IgnoreInject
attribute to a property, it can be excluded from the processing of PropertyChanging
and PropertyChanged
.
By adding the following signature method, you can easily add the process when changed the property:

You can also derive and implement the ViewModel

ViewModel
base class provides an implementation of the GetValue
/SetValue
methods. These methods automatically notify to the XAML control by property changes event PropertyChanging
/PropertyChanged
. For example, when a property is changed upon a button click in ViewModel
, the change will be notified to the XAML control and reflected to the user interface.
In addition, GetValue
defines the default value, and SetValue
defines an overload that can perform additional operations when the value is changed.
If you don't use the ViewModel injector at entire in your project, you can disable it to stop parsing code automatically and speed up the build. Specify False
for EpoxyBuildEnable
of PropertyGroup
of csproj.
Fountain
/Well
is a new event handling feature that is an alternative to EventBinder
(see below).
A XAML control CLR event that cannot be bound, it allows for easy hooking on the ViewModel side, without writing any code-behind. Since RoutedEvent
is also supported, you can write any event handling in exactly the same way.
Also, when a control is detached from the display, the event is automatically unhooked, this prevents memory leaks.
Fountain
is the source of the control's events.Well
is the place to receive events generated byFountain
, which is combined withFountain
by data binding.- Event handlers are added and removed from
Well
.
For example, you can bind WPF's Window.Loaded

In the Well.Add()

This method has two overloads: one is to specify the CLR event name as a string, and the other is to specify RoutedEvent

does not exist in MAUI, Epoxy does not have this feature either.
Different events can be added to a Well
at the same time. Only one handler with the same event name may be added at a time.
EventBinder
will also continue to be supported, but if you want to decide if you should migrate to Fountain
/Well

EventBinder
allows binding of unbindable events as Command
when they are exposed.
This feature avoids the practice of writing a code-behind for the sake of writing an event handler.
For example, you can bind the Window.Loaded

The generic argument of Command.Factory.Create<T>
is the second argument of the event (usually a class that inherits from EventArgs).
Non-generic methods can also be used when event arguments are not required.
TIP 1: In WPF and MAUI, you can use Behavior
and Trigger
to achieve the same thing.
However, they require additional packages and are designed to be generic,
so they are a bit more complex.
Using EventBinder
has the advantage of being simple and using the same notation.
TIP 2: In a UWP environment (including UWP builds of MAUI), the target event should have the following signature:

In other words, only events published with the RoutedEventHandler type are eligible. The UWP runtime environment has strict security checks. This is because the UWP runtime environment has strict security checks, and there are restrictions when dynamically hooking events.

Note: Renting an instance to a control with Anchor
/Pile
allows you to perform any operation on the XAML control. However, hooking control events while renting will cause memory leaks because the ViewModel reference will be retained. Please use Fountain

ValueConverter
class is a base class for safely implementing the XAML converters.
It avoids cumbersome typecasting by explicitly specifying the type, and
It can also automatically fail to convert incompatible types.
You can give an argument to the converter with ConverterParameter
on the XAML,
then you have to change the base class to use when you receive this parameter or not.

Note: The XAML converter cannot be asynchronous due to the structure of XAML.
This means that the TryConvert

Try not to do asynchronous processing in the XAML converter!
(If you want to do so, you can implement it on the Model

side to avoid problems such as deadlocks).
Some different platform contains different UI thread manipulation. Epoxy can handle only one UIThread class, it has commonly manipulation methods. We can easier combine both UI manipulation and asynchronous operations.

Another use of UIThread.TryBind()
is to check if the switch to the UI thread was successful.
This is useful when the host UI framework (e.g., WPF) is aborting in progress,
then use UIThread.TryBind()
to verify continue processing can be performed.
In the current implementation, if you use the UIThread
class,
in the constructor of a ViewModel
while building a View
and like,
inside Xamarin Forms on UWP environment,
you may not get the correct results.
UWP has a different UI thread assigned to each window that holds a view, and if you use it while constructing an instance, it will not be able to determine the view correctly.
GlobalService
class is an Epoxy implementation of techniques
such as dependency injection and dependency isolation.
Like other functions, it can safely implement asynchronous processing.
The key of dependency separation is to define a common interface type:

This is useful when you want to use an existing (unchangeable) interface type.
Existing libraries for dependency injection and dependency isolation
(e.g. DependencyService
class, Unity, MEF, etc.) have the following problems:
- Have complex functionality: In many situations, you simply want an instance that implements
a common interface, so the
GlobalService
class allows you to perform such operations in a fast way. - If the retrieved instance is retained, it is not possible to manage the lifetime:
Since it is fast, it is not a problem to call
ExecuteAsync
every time. Rather, it is preferable to use it only when necessary, each time.
NOTE: As the name "Global" implies, GlobalService
behaves like a kind of global variable.
Try not to use GlobalService
in places where it is not really needed.
Epoxy.Advanced
namespace (using declarations are required) to make it a bit more distinguishable.
The Designer
class can be used to describe processes related to design editing.
If you implement a custom control or user control, when an IDE (such as Visual Studio or Rider) is doing visual editing of a control, it is possible to actually create an instance of the control within the IDE.
In such cases, you may want to change the look and behavior of your design edits rather than doing the real control behavior.
By referring to IsDesignTime
property, you can get whether or
not you are editing at design time in a platform-independent way.
By using the F# version of the package, you can write code that follows the F# style as follows. The instances used are shared, you can use the preferred API for both C# and F# while maintaining the same instances.

Epoxy.Supplements

The IgnoreInject
attribute can be used in F# as well. The process when changing properties returns Async<unit>

So the XAML build action is automatically changed so that it is added to the project as a resource. When you add the XAML file to the project, you don't need to do anything in particular to set it up correctly.
One limitation of this feature is that XAML is always stored in the resource as raw source code (XML text) and is not converted to binary (BAML). Also, the assembly name must always be specified in the XAML namespace in order to be able to reference the type at runtime:
