Bridge Fire burning in LA, San Bernardino counties tops 54,000 acres

Hundreds of California firefighters continue to battle a massive wildfire burning in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties that broke out in San Gabriel Canyon on the weekend of Sept. 8.

Authorities said 66 structures have been destroyed and another 13 have been damaged in the fire's path.  The fire, called the "Bridge Fire," is now considered the largest active wildfire in the state, and it was initially reported around 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 near East Fork and Glendora Mountain roads.

At last check, the fire had torched 54,795 acres with 25% containment. Fire crews were working in more favorable conditions in recent days with cooler temperatures and more moisture in the air.

During a press conference Wednesday, LA County Fire Chief Anthony Morrone said about 20 homes in the Mount Baldy area and 13 in the Wrightwood area were destroyed, as well as six cabins in the wilderness areas also affected by the fire.
