Every day at work I hear another person saying it’s making the rounds in their household.

Here is a huge round up of some tried and true remedies. We hope some of them work for you!

Gargle with warm/hot salt water (best for adults and not kids) – This mix helps kill germs and bacteria in the mouth and throat.

Chili Powder. If the salt and warm water isn’t taking care of business, try adding 1/8-1/4 teaspoon to warm water to gargle (do not drink!). I have tried it and am a believer!

Apple Cider Vinegar Drink this with some honey and lemon or mix it in some juice for the kiddos. You can do this daily as a boost! It has great acid-reducing and virus-fighting properties.

Emergen-C My husband likes to mix this in orange juice for a little extra boost. It’s yummy too!

Throat Coat Tea This might sound weird but I actually pour Emergen-C into a hot cup of throat coat tea. A co-worker turned me onto it years ago and I love the combination of the warmth along with the extra vitamins.

Probiotic. A healthy digestive tract can mean a healthy immune system. Probiotics are live microorganisms that may be able to help prevent and treat some illnesses.

Peppermint Oil. Sprays containing peppermint oil may help to relieve sore throats and to break up mucus helping with cough relief. It contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral properties which can encourage healing. You can take peppermint essential oil to rub on your chest as well and try mixing it with coconut oil. Smells and feels great.

Wellness Juice Shot I make a batch of these each week and take them daily.

Honey. It can fight infection and kill almost every type of bacteria. Put a little (or a lot) in warm water, drink and enjoy.

Elderberry Syrup This stuff is pretty delicious. You can buy this at any vitamin store or even at a Target or Fred Meyer. Elderberry is a great immunity booster, and your kids will like this stuff too!

Increase Water Intake. Similar to the hand washing, this one seems so obvious. But the day gets busy, coffee calls your name and sometimes drinking 8 eight-ounce glasses of water is hard to do. Water can also break up congestion and thin out mucus.

Ginger Lemon Honey ‘Goo’ –Sliced lemons and fresh ginger layered in a mason jar. You cover with honey and let sit a few hours. I add bits of hot water at a time and sip on it. This is loaded with vitamin c, antibacterial from the ginger and throat coat with the honey. It is yummy too!

Oil Pulling. I have used coconut oil for this technique that is found to whiten teeth and also draw out toxins in your body. Take a tablespoon of oil and swish it around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. Spit out, do not swallow. It is not the most convenient of remedies but it’s an ancient technique so it’s worth a try!

Olive Leaf Extract I am not sure what this does exactly, but it has worked for me in the past. I take a couple of capsules and chug water.

Electrolytes. Add electrolytes throughout your day. A lack of them depletes your body of minerals.

Homemade chicken soup. Boil chicken (with bones) and add garlic, parsley, etc. If you’re too sick to do that, buy a good quality bone broth and add lots of garlic to it and whatever else sounds good to you. Sip on the broth throughout the day.

Epsom salt is also great to help detox and increase circulation. Pour some in the bath and soak in the nice hot water – warm for the kids of course! You can pick this up pretty much anywhere – Walgreens, Target, etc.

Menthol Rub on Feet. I know. You think this is weird. I did too. And, then I was desperate, and did it and my kids are so much better. We get ours from the baby aisle because it has lavender in it and smells so much better, but I really do think the Vicks VapoRub kind tends to work faster.

Guess what should also be common practice, mom? REST AND WATER! I know, but it has to be said. How many times do we let ourselves get burned out? Lots.

Rest up. Drink water. Feel better soon!

Balance.

A word I became immediately aware of when I became a mom. A word that often still swirls through my head even after over 14 years of being a parent. A word that lately I have decided has no business in my vocabulary because I quite simply am not even close to achieving it.

There have been seasons in my life before like this one I am currently in. Where my career is taking the front seat and I am having to juggle things constantly to keep it that way; at least for now. This doesn’t mean I wouldn’t drop everything for my kids or my husband. Of course I would. But on a typical day lately, my work has been taking up way more space in my life than it normally does.

It didn’t start slow. There was one day where things shifted at work and it was this immediate shift to an all-hands-on deck, long hours often needed sort of environment. But because I have had similar seasons like this before at work, I know that truly this too shall pass. I will not be operating at this speed or long days in the office as a norm forever.

I remember when I was newer to being a working mom and times like this would completely overwhelm me. Looking back, all I can say is- yeah, they absolutely should have overwhelmed me so I think my reaction was spot on. It’s hard to know that this too shall pass when you have not experienced it before.

During times like this, pretty much all of my normal “set my week up for success” sort of goes out the window. I still do the things I can, but I also give myself lots of grace. I go into more of a survival mode for myself and my household. The things I normally would let absolutely stress me out around the house have to take a back seat. I know that a huge pile of laundry really isn’t the worst thing in the world.

While I don’t think there is such thing as a perfect balance in mom-hood, I have experienced phases of life pretty darn close to achieving it. Balancing a career or school or relationships with parenting is something that will forever make for good material because it’s something we all want to know the secret to.

But there is no secret.

As a seasoned working mom, I absolutely would have figured out the key or the secret by now. So, while I cannot share that; there is something I can share.

When it comes to balance, experience will help.

Don’t let that defeat you if you are a new mom grasping at any help when it comes to finding a balance in raising children while also maintaining a career you love. Learn from moms who have been through it. I am a very strong believer in community to uplift us in life. A community of moms like that here at All Mom Does can truly help pull us up and strengthen us as parents.

In my current state of imbalance, I am pulling on my experience as a mom to achieve a few things:

1) Remind myself this is a season and it’s not forever.

I know my work sometimes pulls me hard like it is now. But that is not the norm.

2) Remind myself I am not alone.

I used to feel guilty pulling on my husband to take on more. But in a household with two working parents, sometimes one parent is going to have to carry more when it comes to kids, cooking and running household sorts of things. A lot of time that defaults to mom which is I think why I used to feel bad. We should not feel bad if dad does more kid drop off and pick up and cooking sometimes.

3) Give grace to myself.

If the laundry piles up or we eat fast food more than normal in a week, who cares.

4) Set boundaries.

This is something I wish I would have learned earlier in life as a working mom. Setting boundaries at work and personal life is really important and feels so good. I strongly encourage all moms to try it.

Times like I am currently experiencing at work are never fun. Despite my experience making it easier for me to more easily accept when things become very off-balance; it still doesn’t mean I enjoy it. But it also doesn’t mean I don’t continue striving to get some sort of balance back. Not a perfect balance as I know that is nearly impossible, but a balance that makes me feel like nothing is totally off kilter like it currently is.

If you are struggling with finding balance as a mom, you are not alone. There are going to be phases of parenthood, particularly for those of us who work full time, where that scale for balance is very uneven. I pray we can all give ourselves grace. Things will ebb and flow and I promise you that you are doing a fantastic job. We are all just doing the very best that we can and that includes during seasons that seem to come with more struggle than others.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble (Matthew 6:33-34)

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Shortbread cookies are an all time favorite in our house. They never ever make it beyond two hours unless I immediately hide some away for later. These crumbly, crunchy, melt in your mouth buttery cookies are my go-to for a quick, easy and absolutely delicious treat.

You can make your shortbread cookies in two ways, one by rolling them out and using a cookie cutter or glass to make individual cookies. Or by forming the dough into a sausage-shaped roll, which is then chilled before using a sharp knife to cut rounds or squares. The second method is my preferred go to because it is a really quick and simple way, and it gives a rustic look to the cookies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter (room temperature)
  • ¾ cup icing sugar
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour

Directions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, vigorously cream the sugar and butter together with a wooden mixing spoon until they create a smooth paste.

2. Next, add the flour and gently mix until well combined.

3. Form into a ball, cover with cling wrap and let the dough rest. Whole wheat flour will need to rest for at least 10minutes to absorb liquid. Note: Shortbread dough should be smooth and not sticky. Add a teaspoon of water and mix if you d\find the dough to be dry.

4. Roll out and shape your dough into a long sausage shape, wrap in plastic wrap or parchment paper and chill in the refrigerator for 30minutes.

5. Preheat t oven to 370 F / 190C.

6. With a sharp knife, cut the dough into ¼ inch rounds or squares depending on the shape you prefer.

7. With plenty of space between the cookies, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

8. If the dough becomes soft during this stage, place it back into the refrigerator for a second chill time before baking.

9. Bake the cookies until the edges turn golden brown. This will take about 10-12 minutes.

10. Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

11. Enjoy your buttery whole wheat shortbread cookies!

Variations:

  • To add a slight twist to the classic buttery shortbread flavor, I added ½ teaspoon of tea masala spice mix (ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg).
  • Other options are ¼ teaspoon rosemary or lemon zest from a whole lemon.
  • If you are feeling extra fancy, you can also dip them in melted chocolate. It helps to chill the cookies first in the freezer for 20 minutes before dipping them into melted chocolate.

One way to make this season simpler is planning a few filling, crowd-pleasing, meals that will leave you and your loved ones satisfied, making it easier to sit back and enjoy this cozy time of year together. One such dish is a Brunch Beef Strata-not only does it serve eight, but it can be made the night before, so you’ll have a more relaxed morning! Ground beef makes this a no-fuss dish to throw together and it tends to be a better value for your money, especially if you buy it in bulk. If you’re shopping for a good deal, I recommend the three-pack of lean ground beef from Costco. We buy several of them for our family of six every time we’re there and I’m always so glad to have them on hand. Especially during the holiday season!

Yes- we have a LOT on our plates this season (pun intended), but the holidays can be enjoyable for moms, too!

Brunch Beef Strata

Ingredients:

• 1-1/2 pounds Ground Beef
• 1 teaspoon salt, divided
• 1/2 teaspoon pepper, divided
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 4 ounces button mushrooms, sliced
• 1 cup chopped onion
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
• 2 cups milk
• 5 large eggs
• Nonstick cooking spray
• 8 cups crustless bread cubes (3/4-inch)
• 2 cups shredded Asiago or fontina cheese
• 1 cup cherry or grape tomatoes, cut in half
• Thinly sliced fresh basil

Directions:

1. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add Ground Beef; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking into 3/4-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally. Remove from skillet with slotted spoon; season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Set aside. Pour off drippings from skillet.

  • Cook’s Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef. Ground Beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of Ground Beef doneness.

2. Heat oil in same skillet over medium heat until hot. Add mushrooms and onion; cook 3 to 4 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently. Return beef to skillet. Add thyme; cook 3 to 5 minutes or until heated through, stirring frequently. Remove from heat. Set aside.

3. Whisk milk, eggs, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in large bowl until blended.

4. Spray 2-1/2 to 3-quart shallow baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Layer half of the bread cubes, 1/2 cup of the cheese and half of the beef mixture in dish. Pour half of the egg mixture over the top. Top with remaining bread cubes, 1/2 cup of the cheese and remaining beef and egg mixtures. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup cheese. Press any dry bread cubes into egg mixture. Cover with aluminum foil; refrigerate 6 hours or as long as overnight.

  • Cook’s Tip: To bake strata immediately, heat oven to 350°F. Assemble strata in dish as directed. Bake, covered, 40 minutes. Uncover; bake 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned.

5. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake strata, covered, 55 minutes. Remove foil. Bake, uncovered, 10 to 15 minutes or until puffed and lightly browned. Let stand 5 minutes. Top with tomatoes and basil, as desired.

When using appropriate portions, a leaner beef cut such as the strip roast (also known as a Strip Loin Roast) can be the healthiest option.

Green Peppercorn Crusted Strip Roast with Red Wine Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 Beef Strip Roast 3 to 4 pounds)
  • Seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon green peppercorns
  • 2 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lemon peel

Wine Sauce

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped shallots
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • kosher salt

COOKING:

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Combine Seasoning ingredients; press evenly onto all surfaces of beef Strip Roast.

2. Place roast on rack in shallow roasting pan. Insert ovenproof meat thermometer so tip is centered in thickest part of beef, not resting in fat. Do not add water or cover. Roast in 325°F oven 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours for medium rare; 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hours for medium doneness.

3. Meanwhile prepare Wine Sauce. Heat olive oil in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add mushrooms and shallots; cook and stir 6 to 9 minutes or until mushrooms are tender and browned. Remove from skillet; keep warm. Add 3/4 cup broth and wine to skillet; cook and stir over medium heat 12 to 16 minutes or until reduced to 1 cup. Combine remaining 1/4 cup broth and cornstarch in small bowl. Whisk cornstarch mixture and pepper into wine mixture; bring to a boil. Cook 1 minute or until sauce thickens, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; add thyme and mushroom mixture. Season with salt, as desired.

4. Remove roast when meat thermometer registers 135°F for medium rare; 145°F for medium. Transfer roast to carving board; tent loosely with aluminum foil. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes. (Temperature will continue to rise about 10°-15°F to reach 145°F for medium rare; 160°F for medium.)

5. Carve roast into slices; season with salt, as desired. Serve with Wine Sauce.

Homemade play dough still requires ingredients and measuring but I would say it’s more of a small to medium level mess. It’s super fun and you can use different food coloring and extract to mix up the colors and scents. Tis the season for everything pumpkin so I recommend pumpkin spice but scents like maple are also really fun. You can then do a guessing/voting game to figure out which one is the best.

You will need:

  • Salt (2/3 cup)
  • Flour (2 cups)
  • Cream of Tartar (4 Tbsp)
  • Oil (2 Tbsp)
  • Food coloring (think fall colors)
  • Cinnamon
  • Maple Extract
  • Pumpkin Extract or Pumpkin Spice (I used ground all spice but highly recommend pumpkin)
  • Water (2 cups)
  • Optional Wax Paper/Parchment Paper
  • Optional Glitter/Sprinkles
  • Optional Cookie Cutters (think fall like leaves and pumpkin shapes)

Directions: (watch the video for a full how-to)

  1. In a large bowl, mix Salt, flour and cream of tartar
  2. Add oil to a large skillet (no heat heat)
  3. Add mixed dry ingredients to the skillet
  4. Add in water
  5. Turn heat on low to medium and give it a good stir
  6. It will start off resembling pancake batter but after a few minutes will thicken
  7. Continue to stir until it’s no longer gooey
  8. Turn off heat
  9. Allow to cool then transfer onto parchment or wax paper
  10. Split into three even parts
  11. Pick a theme for each of the parts

Recommendations:

  • Apple Pie- use red food coloring and cinnamon, add to the dough and knead until it smells like apple pie
  • Pumpkin- use food coloring, add in pumpkin extract/spice (here is where I used all spice) until it smells like pumpkin
  • Maple- just like the others, knead in food coloring and maple extract until it smells like maple
  • Add in glitter/sprinkles if you like and use cookie cutters to make fall shapes.

At 2:00am on November 3rd, we turn our clocks back one hour.

Some people look at this as gaining an hour of sleep. But, in the days that follow, this is me:

That one-hour difference really messes me up. For the first week I’m ready for bed by 6:00 pm and I wake up way too early in the mornings. It turns out that I am not alone.

Did you know that the time changes have been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular issues, and depression? Yikes! Disrupted sleep patterns cause all kinds of issues like more car accidents and even strokes.

So, why do we do it? Time changes began in 1918 to conserve energy use during World War I. They called it “War Time”. Studies have shown that we’re really not saving much energy. That may be why Hawaii and Arizona have opted out of time changes (and also: American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands).

In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which established a uniform daylight-saving time throughout the U.S. The Uniform Time Act states that we must observe the federally-mandated start and end dates for time changes (although there are bills that are trying to do away with all time changes, they haven’t gained enough momentum in the past).

The point of the “Fall Back” is to give us more daylight in the morning and less in the evening. If you’re not an early riser, you may miss the whole point and just notice that the days have grown darker. The shorter, darker days can cause depression or SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in some people.

Experts suggest that we get plenty of sunshine in the morning to combat the darkness. Those of us who live in the Pacific Northwest will laugh at that. Sunshine? What is that? There are plenty of resources available that mimic sunlight though. There are lamps, visors, and even glasses that bathe you in light. They’re worth a try if you’re suffering. In Europe (where the winters are long and dark) candles are in most homes along with light strings, and plenty of lamps. If we fill our homes with light, the darkness will not win.

You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.” Psalms 18:28

Lastly, take a deep dive into the scriptures that talk about light and darkness.

The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Matthew 4:16

The darkness has been fought and defeated and that shines brighter than any lamp we could buy.

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:5

The Fall season fell right into place out here in Vancouver (pun intended!) with beautiful fall colors as far as the eyes can see, the rainy mornings and early sun sets. I find myself cuddled up in a blanket on most days sipping on some ginger and lemongrass chai or a hearty chicken soup and on some days; both!

As the children and I took a walk, the rainy weather did not deter them from picking some fallen leaves. Noticing the beautiful shades of orange, yellow, brown and green, we decided to make a craft out of our finding.

I hope you’ll try it out with your children too! Enjoy!

Supplies:

  • Sheets of paper
  • Stick of glue
  • Printer
  • Leaves

Directions:

Take a photo of your child blowing into the air and print it out on regular paper.

Carefully cut out the outline of the picture and glue it onto one side of a sheet of paper.

Then glue the leaves you gathered onto the same paper to make it look like your child is blowing the leaves.

Identifying your parenting style and understanding how it might complement your child’s temperament and personality is key to supporting your child through his or her development. How do we achieve this? Read on for an in-depth look at several parenting approaches and key personality traits that make your child unique.

Parenting Style

First, it is important to understand what your own parenting style is and how it can affect your child. Internationally renowned research psychologist Diana Baumrind identified four styles of parenting: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved/negligent. Baumrind describes authoritative parents as pragmatic and flexible, setting clear boundaries for their children and encouraging independence within those limits. Authoritarian parents are described as disciplinarians, controlling, and strict, implementing harsh punishments and consequences on their children. Permissive parenting is on the opposite end of the spectrum. This parenting style tends to lack boundaries and rules, instead opting for a parent-child relationship that looks more like a friendship. Finally, uninvolved/negligent parenting is disengaged, with a limited parenting role.

While authoritative parenting is widely considered the preferred approach for parenting, parenting author Jackie Bledsoe notes that each child requires a unique parenting approach. He writes that “your strong-willed child needs an authoritative approach […] your imaginative child needs a patient and positive approach […] your deep child needs a thoughtful and attentive parent approach” and “your diplomatic child needs a selfless and encouraging parenting approach.” Despite the clear styles of parenting that Baumrind identified, parents may need to pick and choose traits from different parenting styles in order to raise children well.

Personality and Temperament

Second, to love and raise your child well, it is important to understand his or her unique temperament and personality.

Temperament is a child’s emotional and behavioral style of responding to the world. It is closely tied to how a child is raised as parenting choices made from infancy affect the way a child interacts with and responds to the world around him or her. The nine traits of temperament are activity level, biological rhythms, initial reaction, adaptability, intensity, mood, distractibility, persistence/attention span, and sensory threshold. For example, a child’s activity level refers to how active a child may be. A child who has a high energy level will require extra “wiggle time” or physical activity to regulate his or her mind and body. Similarly, a child with a low sensory threshold may become overwhelmed by certain environments and situations. Implementing the use of tools such as ear protection can help children with sensory sensitivity operate in overwhelming environments. Each child will have unique variances within each of the nine categories of temperaments. These categories help us understand our child(ren) and develop a personal approach that meets their individual needs.

Personality is the other aspect of a child’s unique nature. This encompasses a person’s thoughts, beliefs, dispositions, and preferences that are acquired throughout life. Personality observed in childhood are strong predictors of adult behaviors. For example, children who display an interest in verbal communication (i.e., they are talkative) tend to be intellectual and fluent speakers when they are adults. Because of this, it is important to know your child well so you can help nurture them as they grow.

In summary, loving your child well entails understanding your parenting style, knowing your child’s temperament and personality, and finally, using this knowledge to nurture and guide your child as he or she grows in independence. Learning more about your own parenting style coupled with who your child is as an individual can lead to happier parenting moments and an overall healthier relationship between parent and child. The better parents understand what their children need, the better they can love and support them.

I can just focus on the beauty of the Christmas merchandise.

I was recently in a large variety store, and I came upon their Christmas section all set up and ready for the season, and my first reaction was … JOY. Pure, unadulterated joy. I immediately slowed my pace and smiled widely as I looked at each little ornament and decoration.

And, then I heard it behind me; two women making disgusted sounds and saying, “Christmas already? We haven’t even gotten through Halloween yet!”

I immediately felt embarrassed, like the smile on my face and my slow pace of enjoyment were somehow wrong. I started questioning my feelings. Was this early set-up of Christmas a bad thing? Should I be angry too?

I personally love any reminder of Jesus’ birth (no matter how early).

When I was young, I worked at a Hallmark shop. Corporate had us set up the collectible ornaments in July. If you know any ornament collectors, you know that they love to see the new items early.

But it was a 50/50 split on how customers reacted. Fifty percent of the people loved seeing the ornaments and fifty percent of the customers were disgusted by the summer preview. Those who were mad were quick to tell me how awful it was. I wanted to wear a pin that said, “It wasn’t my decision!” (Note: It is never the store clerk’s decision on when to do a set-up, and yelling at them is never helpful).

I always wondered, even back then, what the big deal was. So we set up beautiful little ornaments for people to enjoy in the summertime. Did this ruin Christmas? Was this a sin somehow? Did it make God angry that we started celebrating a bit early?

Sure, one could argue that the Holidays have become commercialized and that stores contribute to this by setting up their displays too early, but here’s what I realized: October and November are the best times for me as a mom (and Nana) to pause and take in all the holiday beauty.

Come December, my purse is filled with to-do lists and my mind is crammed full of menu plans, gift lists and card lists. In December, I tend to be running around like a crazy person, and I don’t have the energy to truly enjoy the stores’ decorations.

The argument of, “Let us get through Harvest parties and Thanksgiving first,” have never made sense to me either. Just because I enjoyed looking at some Christmas things in a store does not mean that I’m going to ignore my pumpkin parties or stop celebrating Thanksgiving.

So, I’m sorry crabby ladies behind me, I’m going to slow my pace and enjoy looking around while my Harvest décor is still up. I’m going to peruse ornaments before I’ve cooked my turkey for Thanksgiving. I may even hum a Christmas carol or two, because this is my time to truly focus on the beauty of Jesus’s birth before life gets crazy.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Luke 2:6-7 NIV

And I’m happy to celebrate His birth at any time of year.

I know this phrase has likely been said since the beginning of time, but parenting is not what it used to be! Technology, for better or worse, is a whole new ball game. When my husband and I were little, things used to be so simple (another thing I’m quite sure every generation has said!) We wrote down a friend’s phone number at school and if the land line was free later, we could call them and have a chat or make plans. We wrote everything down at school and had this ancient thing called a computer lab where we learned how to type and create Word documents.

For the most part, I think kids and parents back then were more present in their day to day lives. Once the phone hung up, that was it. No scrolling, posting, texting, or Candy Crushing. Fast forward to today and there are so many things competing for our children’s attention that it can be difficult to keep track of it all. Honestly, it feels downright exhausting at times! When they’re little, it’s easier to control screen time and you don’t have worry about your toddler texting or checking the search history on their school laptop.

I’m not saying that all technology is the devil, even though I have been accused of such by a certain teenager I know. I acknowledge how beneficial it can be and how many great things can come of it! There are mounds of encouraging material, helpful websites, and ways to communicate with friends and loved ones that make life a lot simpler. The hard part about raising kids in a world that’s so saturated with screens and media, is teaching them how to set healthy limits for themselves. We all know how tempting it can be to have this wealth of information and entertainment at our fingertips. Even adults can struggle to regulate their screen time, so how do we show children and teens how to find a balance and set limits in the high-speed, high-tech world they’re growing up in?

I assure you, the answer to that question won’t make you the most popular mom in the neighborhood. Regardless of what other parents say, it’s still our job to set limits for them when they haven’t yet developed the skills or experience to do it themselves.

I can’t speak for schools everywhere but in our public school district, kids in fourth grade and up take their school laptops home with them. I’m not a fan of this, even though I see the benefits for teachers, kids who stay home sick and need to catch up on work, or those who don’t have access to computers at home. For parents, it’s just one more screen we need to limit and monitor. Even with an app through the district that shows us what sites our kids have visited, it’s easy to miss things. Through much trial and error over the last few years, we’ve found a pretty good system for handling the many laptops, video games, tv’s, and phones that float around here. It might not be perfect, and we have made many mistakes, but it’s the best we have so far and has helped us maintain our sanity in this crazy household we live in!

The first thing sounds like a lot of work, but once everyone is used to it things run a lot more smoothly! We keep all remotes, video game controllers, phones, tablets, and laptops in one place as well as having passwords to get into them that the kids don’t know. Ideally, this is a place where you will notice if something is snagged by an older kiddo who is tempted to sneak one more game in or watch something after mom and dad are asleep.

For us, it’s a storage basket in our room. Laptops and cell phones aren’t allowed to be taken downstairs and can only be used in the main living area. Essentially, we “check out” any devices or remotes. For our family, that simplifies things for us and we aren’t constantly having to check who has what or how long they’ve been on it.

My favorite thing about this system, is that it gives our kids freedom to still be kids. Especially when it comes to our almost fourteen-year-old and his cell phone, the last thing we want is for him to feel like he must always be attached to it-even though he might want to be sometimes! We aren’t experts by any means, but my husband and I are determined to help our children to develop a balance so that hopefully when they leave our home someday, they will be able to manage their time wisely and be present in the world around them.

The next thing is likely to be met with some resistance depending on what your kids are used to, but everyone functions a lot better when they know what the expectations are. If things have become a frustrating mess, setting up a video game or tablet time schedule can really help cut the chaos down. For us, that looks like no video games on weekdays. It just got too complicated trying to keep track of how long someone has played and didn’t seem to help anyone’s attitudes after a long day at school. It was such a breath of fresh air to not have to have that conversation every day and knowing that video games weren’t even option helped our kids focus on other things.

To tell the truth, there are days I just want to throw away all devices and move my family out to a cabin in the woods. It can be really overwhelming and honestly even obnoxious to have to navigate technology as a parent (especially when your kids start to surpass your knowledge on it!) Blocking all the things, monitoring, setting up boundaries. It’s just a lot! It’s ok if that drives you nuts. It might get even more complicated depending on your family situation and if your older kids spend time at home without you.

Messy stuff aside, I also understand that this is the world my kids are living in, and that means it’s also our job to equip them. Giving them access to everything is easy, guarding their hearts and minds is not. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7

I can promise you it is worth every exhausting moment, and we have to try. We do what we can, and pray without ceasing for the wisdom to raise our children in the way the Lord wants them to go. Hopefully someday when our kids look back at these years, they’ll be grateful we did things this way. Even if they don’t and they still think we’re strict and crazy, I know I’ll sleep well at night knowing we gave it everything we had.

Philippians 4:8 – Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.

I LOVE FALL!

Fall is my reward for making it through the summer.  The changing colors, sweaters, hot drinks, good books, rainy days, I love it all!

So, when I saw these cute little cinnamon pumpkins, I just had to try to make them for myself (and share the recipe with you!).

Here’s what you’ll need:

 

  • 1 cup ground cinnamon
  • Optional: pinch of ground cloves
  • ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Elmer’s glue (white or clear)
  • Wood sticks (I cut them from my yard)
  • Butter knife or skewer
  • Parchment paper and cookie sheet

 

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F.

Mix the cinnamon, applesauce and glue together in a medium bowl. Stir until all the cinnamon is moistened.

Place parchment paper on a cookie sheet and roll the dough into 15 balls (they will be about a heaping Tablespoon in size).

Put a stick in each ball, make sure your stick is long enough to stay in when the pumpkin is dry.

Make “pumpkin grooves” around your pumpkins with a knife or skewer.

Bake your little gourds for 2-3 hours (I did 3). Rotate the pan every 30 minutes (I don’t know if this is really necessary, but I did it).

Remove from the oven and place the pan on a cooling rack to further dry for 24 hours.

Wait until the pumpkins are cool before you peel them off the paper. A little paper may stick to the bottom, but as my mom would say, “It will never be seen on a galloping horse.

You could add these to a bowl of potpourri, line them up on a mantle, give them as gifts…  The possibilities are endless!  Wherever you use them, your house will smell amazing!

Note: Do a search on where spices are mentioned in the Bible and you will be taken down a sweet-smelling rabbit hole!

My kids love pancakes but making them in the morning is kind of an event that comes with a lot of dishes and leftovers. I discovered these single-serving protein-packed microwavable cups from Kodiak Cakes, but at nearly $3 a pop they’re not the most economical breakfast option.

I wanted to see if I could replicate the concept with a homemade version using their pancake mix. I like it better than traditional pancake mixes because it’s made with whole grains and has way more protein and fiber, but if you have regular pancake mix on hand you can totally use that in this recipe, too.


So the next time your kid wants pancakes for breakfast but you don’t feel up to it, make them one of these! You mix, cook, and serve all in one mug or ramekin, and the microwave does all the heavy lifting. Breakfast has never been easier.


Microwave Mug Pancake Recipe

Mix all ingredients in microwave-safe mug or ramekin (BTW HOW CUTE ARE THESE?!?!?). Microwave 2 minutes on 50% power.* Continue cooking in 30-second increments on 50% power until your pancake is cooked. You’ll know it needs more time if the center of the top still looks wet. Drizzle with syrup and serve!

*Note: Microwave cooking times vary. Once you figure out how long your specific microwave takes, you can just cook it that long from the beginning without having to check it every 30 seconds.

**Using traditional pancake mix will yield a fluffier pancake than the Kodiak Cakes mix, which produces a cake that is more dense.

You can totally customize your pancake. Try mixing the following in before cooking:

  • Blueberry Pancakes: 2 Tb fresh or frozen blueberries
  • Chocolate Chip Pancakes: 2 Tb chocolate chips
  • Confetti Pancakes: 1 tsp colored sprinkles
  • Cinnamon Pancakes: 1/2 tsp cinnamon

What you will need:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups grated carrots
  • 1 apple, peeled and grated
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Let’s get baking!

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, coconut oil, orange juice, and vanilla extract.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

Now fold in the good stuff: grated apple, grated carrots, shredded coconut, raisins, and chopped nuts.

Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups, filling each about 3/4 full.

Bake for about 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.

Allow the muffins to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Enjoy!

  • Remember, if tech brings bad fruit, it is expendable and can be replaced by life-giving adventures (Matthew 5:28-30)

They aren’t only terrifying for children, but they can be jarring for moms and dads, too! One minute you’re fast asleep, enjoying every precious second of shut eye that you can get. Then suddenly, you hear it: the creaking of a bed frame followed by the rattling of your doorknob. You hear feet thumping across the floor accompanied by terrible howls. Suddenly, you feel something, or someone, crashing into your bed. So it begins, the sometimes very long process of calming the storm and helping your sweet, scared child get back to sleep.

For some people, the answer is simple: lift-up your blankets and have your terrified tot sleep in your bed for the rest of the night. After-all, it can be heartbreaking to see your child so scared and you just want to keep them close to ease their minds. This is completely understandable! My well-intentioned husband is one of those people. This is likely because he is such a heavy sleeper that he isn’t quite sure what is even happening when one of our kids comes into our room scared at night. Most of the time, he has no recollection of the event once the sun comes up. He also doesn’t tend to notice the child rolling between us all night. There have been many times when one of our kids comes bounding into our room and my dozy, half-asleep husband will start to lift the blankets to welcome them in. Knowing the type of night that lies ahead in that scenario, I quickly push the blankets back down and lead my little one back to bed.

I promise I’m not a monster, but after four kids and almost fourteen years of parenting, I do know that this isn’t the best solution for our family. If you’re a parent, especially a mother, you know how difficult uninterrupted sleep is to come by. I learned early on that I will hardly sleep the rest of the night if there is a child in my bed. I hear every noise, feel every jab, and just need this one place in my home to be a child-free zone. Mentally and physically, that space is so important to me. Not only that, but children can be habit-forming-especially in the younger years! I know that if we allow them into our bed once, it is likely to turn into a nightly affair which will make it that much harder to get them to stay in their beds. I think it’s important to note that the exception to this rule for our family is when we have a newborn baby in the bassinet right next to us. Otherwise, I will do what I can to help my children of any age to get back to sleep in their own beds.

Much like the crying-it-out method for babies and when done in a soothing way, it can give your kids the opportunity to face their fears while you comfort them. That can be easier said than done, especially depending on the severity of the nightmare and the age of your child. One of the most important things that we do from the earliest of ages, is to show our children that Jesus is our ultimate comfort. If they see that we count on Him for peace and protection, then hopefully that will help them to build up a foundation of trust as well. After-all, trusting Jesus over our fears is something we must choose to do every single day. My goal is to show them how powerful and mighty His name is-especially when they are overwhelmed by fear. Hopefully, as they get older, they will lean into their relationship with Jesus and count on Him to be their Good Shepherd, even in the darkest places.

When my kids come running in at night from a bad dream, there are several things I do to help them get back to sleep…

First, Listen. I ask if they want to tell me about it. As creepy as that can be depending on the dream, some kids find it helpful to get it all out so we can understand why they are so scared. Depending on your child’s personality, this might not be the case! Some of my kids would rather not say a word about the details and just want to curl up while I sing a song.

Second, Pray. I pray with my child for Jesus to send his best angels to watch over them and to fill our home with His Holy Spirit. We say, “In Jesus’ name, Go Away!” to the bad thoughts. I’ve also encouraged them to memorize Psalms 4:8, which I often repeat when I’ve had a stressful dream. “In peace, I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.”

Third, Encourage. This can be singing comforting songs, reading a short story to distract them, or even helping them to think of a happy movie or book to take their minds off the scary thoughts. One of my sons is always comforted by The Christmas Song, while another likes to hear Jesus Loves Me. My youngest hasn’t fully entered the bad-dream stage yet, but when he is nervous and seems startled awake it really helps if I encourage him to get cozy on his pillow so he can comfort his stuffed animal who isn’t feeling well. You never know what will work for each individual child!

Finally, Reassure. Sometimes, just knowing that you’ll be back in to check on them is all they need to get to sleep again. Even if you aren’t planning to get up and go back to their room, it can give them so much relief to know you’re right there and will be by their side in a few minutes to make sure they’re alright. Almost every single time I’ve said this, they go right back to sleep.

When all else fails and they are just struggling to be put at ease, I find it helps to turn on the light. My kids have nightlights, but when a bad dream strikes, they might just really need that bedside lamp switched on. I try everything else first because I do think they sleep better when the room is darker, but if it helps us all get back to bed then I am willing to let that light shine!

There are so many great bedtime prayer books for all ages out there. They’re helpful to read with your kids before bed or after a bad dream and can give them some extra comfort. One of our favorites is Bedtime Prayers by Bonnie Rickner Jensen. The sweet pictures, rhyming poems, and an encouraging verse on each page are reminders of our Shepherd’s love and faithfulness. Found by Sally Lloyd-Jones was gifted to us by my grandmother. It’s another powerful book with beautiful pictures that reminds our children they are never alone. This retelling of Psalm 23 can help ease their fears and give them a sense of security.

What do you and your family do when bad dreams creep in? Are you an everyone-pile-in-the-same-bed kind of family or do you try to keep everyone snoozing in their own space? If your kids are grown, what did you do to soothe them when they had nightmares? No matter what you do to ease the fears of your children or how much sleep is lost, try to take comfort in the fact that you are their safe place. Soak in these years when all they want is to be close to you, even when you are at your wits-end and want nothing more than to peel them off of your body. It’s a privilege to be their protectors, their under-the-bed checkers, and the ones who shine light in the darkness of the most menacing closets.

That’s one of the reasons I love Autumn. I’m attracted to color, and there is nothing like the sun hitting a tree that has its Fall “clothes” on.

I also love being cozy in my little house, reading a book with a few candles lit. The lack of light is the main reason many people dislike Fall. Autumn and Winter can be problematic for those who need a lot of light to thrive.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5

In the Bible, light has always been a symbol of holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom, grace, and hope (light is mentioned over 300 times in the scriptures). By contrast, darkness has been associated with evil, sin, and despair. It’s no wonder that we crave light!

I follow a gal on Instagram who lives in an area of Sweden that has really long, dark winters. Instead of moaning about it, she has filled her home with light. There are lamps in every corner, candles lit, and strings of lights around the windows. She hardly notices the darkness outside. She has taught me a lot about changing a bad situation into a lovely blessing.

This craft is a step in that direction.

Let’s make a Fall Leaf Lantern together!

Step One: Take a walk around your yard (or a park) and gather some leaves in interesting shapes and colors.

Do this the day before you plan to make your lantern. Then, tuck your leaves into a heavy book and press them overnight.


Step Two: Get your supplies ready. You’ll need:

  • Glass vase or jar (mine was 1.99 at a thrift shop)
  • White tissue paper
  • Mod Podge
  • A foam brush
  • Your gathered leaves

Step Three: Cut or tear pieces of the white tissue paper. Make sure you have enough to do two layers on your vase (your fingers will be too sticky later).

Step Four: Sponge Mod Podge on the glass, spreading tissue on top as you go. Make sure you overlap the tissue so the whole vase or jar is covered. I extended mine over the top and bottom (I’ll cut the ends later).


Step Five: While your Mod Podge is still wet, press your leaves in whatever pattern you desire.

Step Six: Carefully brush your Mod Podge on top of the leaves and put down another layer of tissue.

Step Six: Let it dry. I put mine on top of a roll of washi tape to dry so it wouldn’t stick to the wax paper I put on my table.

Step Seven: After it’s dry, trim off any overhang (I used an emery board to file the ends off). Place a battery powered candle inside (or a real one if you don’t have small children) and watch how your room lights up!

(Because ‘tis the gray season here in the Pacific Northwest.) We wrap our hands around paper cups, breathe in the scented steam, and enjoy the peaceful buzz of the atmosphere for a moment.

If we skipped the small talk and went straight for your God story, I bet you’d have testimonies to tell. Times when God came through with a miracle after a physical or mental health crisis, parenting challenge, job loss, or financial need. Or maybe a beautiful transformation or healing that came after grief and struggle. Those are the moments we praise God for after the conclusions of them all. We can laugh (or happy cry) over them now.

But when we get to here and now, it gets a little quiet. A little more still and solemn. We’ve made it to the vulnerable part–the questions and problems we haven’t found answers or solutions for yet. This is where the faith hits the pavement, so to speak. This is where we decide whether or not to keep trusting him, even if the outcome is uncertain.

As much as we can tell our stories and speak of God’s faithfulness, it can be so difficult to trust him when the outlook is cloudy, when you can’t see the road ahead.

Can I reach across the table, hold your hand, and lend you a little faith for this season?

If you feel like God has left you stranded in the struggle, repeat after me: Our God is the God of tying loose ends and finishing what he starts.

He’s not the God of “sorry, I forgot.” Or the one who runs out of time or resources. Not the one that changes his mind or gives up or lets you down.

Even in my biggest struggles, in the loss and grief and the way things didn’t turn out as hoped, I know this to be true: he still manages to find a way to show up and work things for the good. Whether or not “good” looks like what I thought it would.

This is the trustworthy, steadfast character of our God. Our God finishes what he starts. He has the final say. He always follows through.

Let these promises from God and assurances of his character sink in:

He finishes what he starts: “…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6 NIV

His Word will be fulfilled: “…so is my word that comes from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” – Isaiah 55:11 NIV

Jesus accomplishes God’s plan of salvation: ““My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” – ‭‭John‬ ‭4:34‬ NIV

He doesn’t change his mind or go back on his word: “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” – Numbers‬ ‭23:19‬ NIV

His promises are trustworthy: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” – 2 Corinthians‬ ‭1:20-22‬ ‭NIV

He is faithful and will fulfill what he promises: “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” – 1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:23-24‬ ‭NIV

While I love to see the ways we are like God and made in his image, how incredibly set apart he is from us! How trustworthy and unwavering, to the very end!

Currently, in my own time of questions and unknowns, I’m wrapping these promises around me like a blanket.

He will not give up on me. He won’t lead me halfway and leave me hanging. My story isn’t over until he says it is (and he is working it out for my good). And the same goes for you, friend.

Three things will help us to keep choosing faith: First, knowing and calling to mind his promises, as we just talked about above. Second is to continue telling those stories of victory and grace, whether to others or ourselves, reminding us of how God has shown up in the past. And third, perhaps, is borrowing the faith of friends who hold your arms up in the fight. (See the battle of the Israelites versus the Amalekites in Exodus 17.)

I don’t know what promise you’re waiting on today. Or maybe it’s not even a promise — it’s something you know is coming, but you have no idea how it will all come together.

Don’t panic. The story doesn’t end here. Trust God to finish what He started. Let us here at AllMomDoes pray with you through the process and help hold your arms up as you wait for the miracle.

The preacher at Church on Sunday, who happens to be my husband (super proud of him) cantered his sermon on 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

‘In all circumstances’ is different from ‘for all circumstances.’ Essentially the circumstances should not matter when it comes to giving thanks to God. However, if we are to speak honestly, we have been programmed to make them matter. We typically do not give thanks during unfavourable circumstances; however, Paul admonishes to do so even while in these unfavourable circumstances.

This is easier said than done and requires a deliberate and intentional frame of mind. It requires a renewing of the mind until we think like God thinks and not the world.

Romans 12:2Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing, and perfect will.

The will of God for us who are in Christ Jesus is to give thanks in all circumstances, as we see in 1 Thessalonians 5:18.

No matter what is going on in our lives or around us, whether good or not good, there are constant things that we are always to give thanks for. Things that are not dependant on our mood or circumstance and are not affected by the changing seasons of life.

These are some examples of what to anchor our thanksgiving to God on, no matter the circumstances.

1. God’s Unending love.

  • John 3:16 tells us that God loved us so much, that He sent His one and only beloved son to die for our sin, and He rose again on the third day victorious over sin and death so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but be saved. We also know that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
  • Romans 8:32 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

So, in all circumstances, we can thank God for His love that saves us, is unchanging and always accessible to us.

2. Being chosen.

God has chosen me for Himself. He has made a conscience decision to want me and choose me above all of creation.

  • John 15:16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
  • Jeremiah 29:11For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

3. The Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit was not sent on a brief short-term assignment but is ever-present to help us. The Holy Spirit’s help, empowerment and fruit is a constant for us as God’s children. We can depend on the Holy Spirit in all types of circumstances.

  • John 14:26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
  • Romans 8:26-27Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
  • Galatians 5:22-23But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

4. The Word of God.

We live at such a blessed time when the Word of God is readily available in print, on apps, audio versions and has even been translated into so many different languages. I’m personally very grateful for the readily available and unchanging Word of God. One way of showing this gratefulness is to constantly read and meditate on the Word. To not waste the great opportunity that the men and women of old longed for but did not experience.

  • Colossians 3:16-17Let the Word of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action), So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

5. Revelation.

The Lord has revealed Himself to us through His Word.

  • Deuteronomy 29:29The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.
  • Hebrews 1:1-2In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.

Now, because God has esteemed His word highly above everything, He honours it.

Psalm 138:2I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your Name for Your loving devotion and Your faithfulness; You have exalted Your Name and Your Word above all else.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

I typically have a short window of time before the extracurricular chauffeuring of kids begins. Most Sundays, I will prepare things for the coming week. Washing veggies, cooking taco meat, simple things like that to make the weeknights easier.

Recipes often claim to be “quick and easy” and then 45 minutes later I find myself still without dinner on the table. When I find a recipe that is actually quick and easy and something that tastes good, I keep it on hand.

This gnocchi soup is not only actually quick and easy but it’s also vegetarian which, for us with a vegetarian 11-year-old, makes it an ideal meal. It also has a ton of veggies in it but my kids loved it.

Warning- the finished product doesn’t look totally satisfying but I promise you it is delicious and the perfect fall meal.

  • Vegetable Broth- about 2 cups
  • “Holiday Vegetable Hash- this is chopped up butternut squash, sweet potato, celery, sage, rosemary and parsley. You could chop it up yourself, but this pre-chopped version made it incredibly simple.
  • Boursin Cheese- 5.3 ounce box
  • Gnocchi- I used pumpkin to make the perfect fall meal

Here is what you will do:

Sautee the vegetables in a lightly oiled pan until they are softened

In a blender add softened vegetables, Boursin cheese, 2 cups vegetable broth (I used about 2.5 cups)

Blend for about a minute

Pour mixture into a pot and bring to a boil

Add in gnocchi

Cook gnocchi as instructions call for (typically only a few minutes until they start rising to the top

I served my kids grilled cheese on the side but croutons in the soup would also be lovely.

I love all of the different personalities, the way we support each other, and the memories we make. Even so, there are certainly some hard days around here. The kind of days that feel like that classic scene from Home Alone. You know, when the power goes out so the entire family at the McAllister house sleeps in and almost misses their flight? The film reel is sped up as they run around the house in an absolute panic trying to get ready.

That is how I sometimes picture my household with our four kids. It can be a mad rush trying to coordinate everyone and everything. On the really crazy days though, the ones when I’m running behind and everyone is crying, on those days the overwhelming chaos can quickly spiral out of control and land me in a pit of mom-guilt. I hate how this guilt steals my joy, and I really hate how easy it is to let it!

Moms have this unique ability where we manage to worry about so many things at once it is a wonder our heads don’t actually explode. I don’t know about you, but once I start feeling guilty about one thing it just reminds me of all the other things I feel guilty about. This usually happens when I’m already overwhelmed and then I guess my mom brain thinks, “Hey, things are already going terribly today, why don’t you heap on a pile of guilt about all the ways you are letting your children down? That’ll help you calm down!”

Let me paint you a picture of how this unproductive thought-process usually unfolds and maybe you can relate. The baby is crying because he has been stuck in the car seat for what seems like the entire day while his siblings are shuffled to school and sports. I am desperate to get home so he can be fed and enjoy a much-needed break from the car. I tell myself there is no way he will develop properly because he hasn’t had tummy time today, wasn’t offered a variety of baby food, and hasn’t had a proper nap.

The car in front of me is going five under the speed limit and has a bumper sticker that I can’t stand, so it feels a little more valid to be impatient with them. This leads me to say some angry things. While I say them, I remind my kids that I’m being a terrible example and should be kind to everyone-desperately hoping they don’t mimic this behavior when they drive someday. I am also hitting every red light which leads to more ranting.

The preschooler is losing it because he is hungry and he dropped his toy car. Older sibling number one just wants to tell me about his day and has been interrupted ten times, and older sibling number two just wants silence and slowly bangs his forehead against the window, praying the car ride of misery will come to end.

I realize that even once we are home I won’t have time to make the dinner I had planned. While thinking of home I’m reminded of the pets. I know the guinea pig will hear us come in and he will be squeaking and leaping around his cage with joyful anticipation for some attention and carrots. The carrots will happen-the attention, probably not.

When we feed the dog his dinner, he will run and grab the ball for a game of fetch that we don’t have time for. He will stare at me with his sweet, brown, Labrador-eyes and I know it will crush him when I shut the door in his face and say, “Sorry, Kevin. Not today.” So. Much. Guilt.

As all of this plays out and I start to sweat, it is like my mind is having a battle with itself. I know I should take a deep breath and calm down. I know that it is just a stressful moment and we will all survive. Instead, I typically start to picture all the things that should be different and all of the ways I have failed my kids.

Failed them by having a bad temper instead of grace and failed them by not meeting enough of their individual needs. This is a hard one to accept; moms can’t meet every need all the time. Oh, how we wish we could! Our car rides aren’t perfect, our homes aren’t perfect, and every day there is a list of things we could have done better or could have done more of.

So, what can we do after diving into that pool of mom-guilt? How do we get out of it? It’s so easy to swim around in there and wallow in our shortcomings.

One of the first things I think of is Matthew 6:34:

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

I have known this verse for as long as I can remember and I’m quick to repeat it to my children when they’re overwhelmed. Why is it so hard for me to put it into action? Maybe I need to have it tattooed on the back of my hand so I will be reminded of its truth while I’m driving.

While I pray for the self-control and trust to live out Matthew 6:34, I can also try to finish well. Even when those crazy, guilt-filled days come, it is possible for us to finish them well.

That’s what matters to our kids. Even if there isn’t a lot of time left in the day there are small things we can do that matter. Sure, they might remember the car ride of misery, but they can also go to sleep thinking about the book you read, the song you sang, or the way you listened about their day.

Maybe play a game or watch a family movie if you can. I know for us, some pancakes for dinner can be a great way to reset on days like that! These little moments with our kids can fill our hearts up and remind us that they will be ok, regardless of all the things we didn’t do.

No matter what mom-guilt you’re dealing with today, no matter how big or small your worries, try to remember you are not alone. Your kids love you, and I’d be willing to bet that you are doing a lot better of a job than you give yourself credit for!

I was a tired mommy whose husband worked six days a week. He left for work at noon and didn’t get home until midnight. We shared a car, and we were so poor back then. That didn’t leave me very many options for relaxation or entertainment. It was a lonely and depressing time.

One morning, I went outside and right in front of my door grew the most beautiful mushroom I had ever seen. The colors were amazing, and the mushroom was large and majestic looking. I grabbed my camera and took a picture.

It was a good thing I did, because the next morning, it was gone. I never saw a mushroom like that again. But it had served its purpose. It reminded me of the beauty God had created and it made me feel seen and loved.

The photos of that mushroom have had a spot in our family album ever since and my kids have all heard the story of the magic mushroom that God sent to cheer up a tired and crabby mom.

As a result, my kids have had their own relationships with mushrooms. My eldest daughter loves those red mushrooms with tiny white spots. One year, she found some growing in (of all places) a parking lot! She managed to capture the moment.

My middle daughter’s young son loves mushrooms! He wants them on his pizza and thinks having them sautéed in butter is about the best thing ever.

My son has grown his own mushrooms (in his apartment) and he loves to cook with the bizarre varieties he finds on his travels.

Fall is a great time for mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest. After a lot of rainfall, there tends to be a lot of mushroom activity. In my yard alone, I probably have five different varieties. I’m not an expert and would never attempt to eat any of them, but I love their cute shapes.

So, when I heard of a craft that turns mandarin orange peels into mushrooms, I was entranced. A $2.99 sale at my grocery store on oranges sealed the deal. I had to try it.

Here are the easy steps.

Ingredients:

  • Mandarin oranges
  • Cinnamon sticks or twigs
  • Hot glue gun or craft glue
  • Sharp knife

Directions:

Cut your mandarins in half. I found it easy to cut just into the peel and leave the mandarin whole.

Carefully slide your thumb under the peel and scoop out the orange sections. Eat them, of course!

Place them on a baking sheet on a crumpled-up ball of foil. This allows them to keep their shape. If you’re planning on hanging them, poke two holes in the top with a skewer.

Bake them in a 200 degree oven, flipping them every 30-45 minutes until they are dry. Start with the caps facing up or the tops will flatten.

When they are dry, thread a loop on the top through the two holes you poked with a skewer (if you’re planning to hang them).

Glue a cinnamon stick or a twig onto the underside of the “cap”. You can use your foil to hold the stems in place while they dry.

That’s it! Use them in centerpieces, as ornaments (string a thread through the top with a needle) or attach them to a wreath.

Although there is no mention of mushrooms in the Bible, their vast underground network (covering 2% of the earth) reminds me of how God covers us even though we can’t see Him.

Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) says:

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

I have never forgotten the gift of that beautiful mushroom that blessed an overwhelmed momma when she felt forgotten. I will continue to search out the many blessings that surround me every day to show me that I am loved.

God, in His All Knowing and majestic wisdom foresaw these seasons in life and set up re-fueling stations for us to get that re-charge and boost to keep us going full steam ahead, to enjoy the life He has given us in Christ and fulfill purpose.

1. Pray!

Luke 5:16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray [in seclusion].

God Himself will strengthen and re-new those who earnestly pray to Him. We see these many times through out the Bible. One such example is Jesus praying on the Mount of Olives.

Luke 22:41-43 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” An angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him.

2. Worship.

Worship knits our heart to God’s heart.

Singing songs of praise and worship to God brings us into His presence, and in His presence there is life!

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

3. Be intentional and deliberate about your physical body: Eat and sleep.

When Elijah was just spent out, tired, exhausted and burnt out after that great miraculous time on the mountain, did God say he was being of little faith? No, God did not even reprimand him, because the God who made us and understands our human frailties. We do not yet have a glorified heavenly body, so in this earthy body, we need rest, and we need nourishment. Both physical and spiritual refreshing. God said to Elijah, eat and sleep. When is the last time you took a break to really rest? Jesus often went to a quiet place alone to rest and refuel. Away from the crowds or congregation and away from the disciples or family and close friends. He did this how frequently? Was it only once in His ministry? No, it was often.

1 Kings 19:5-7 Then Elijah lay down under the bush and went to sleep. An angel came to him and touched him. The angel said, “Get up and eat!” Elijah looked around, and by his head there was a cake that had been baked over coals and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then went back to sleep. Later the Lord’s angel came to him again, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat! If you don’t, you will not be strong enough to make the long trip.”

4. Dwell in God’s Word.

To dwell is to remain, to live in and not just visit occasionally.

Psalm 19:7 says the law of the Lord is perfect and flawless, restoring, reviving and refreshing the soul. When we read God’s Word the Bible, when we meditate on it and are careful to obey it, we are renewed daily.

5. Cultivate friendships and spend time with friends that build you up in the Lord, and also be that kind of friend to others.

Proverbs 27:9-10 TPT Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God’s presence. So never give up on a friend or abandon a friend of your father— for in the day of your brokenness you won’t have to run to a relative for help. A friend nearby is better than a relative far away.

6. Receive God’s mercy.

Just receive it! Jesus paid the price. As long as you are in Jesus, you are entitled to God’s mercy. It may seem too good to be true, you may feel like you do not deserve it, and this is true. There is nothing we can ever do to earn God’s mercy, that is why we must receive it by faith through Christ Jesus. When we receive God’s mercy, we are refueled and refreshed because God’s mercies are new every morning.

7. Encourage yourself in the Lord.

You have heard the Bible verse that says David encouraged himself in the Lord. But what does it even mean? How can you apply it to your everyday life? Encouraging yourself in the Lord means drawing closer to God in times of need or distress. David encouraged himself when his camp had been raided; the wives and children of his army men had been taken captive, including his own. Any regular person would have fallen apart, but David was no regular person, he was a man after God’s own heart. If you love the Lord and your heart is set on pleasing Him, then you are like David and are also able to encourage yourself in the Lord. This basically means to remind yourself of who God is, how powerful God is, how He has saved you from impossible situations before and will do it again and again.

What I find striking is that David encouraged himself, he did not wait for the Priest to encourage him, for his friends or companions. HE encouraged and strengthened himself. Sometimes, there will not be anyone to encourage us, we must rise to the occasion and encourage ourselves in the Lord. And the best tool we can use for this is the Word of God. We must daily store up God’s Word in our hearts so that it is ready to work for us in times of discouragement.

1 Samuel 30:6. Further, David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, for all of them were embittered, each man for his sons and daughters. But David felt strengthened and encouraged in the LORD his God.

David was not embittered towards God, nor did he ask God how He could allow something like this to happen to him yet he had faithfully served God. Instead, David separated himself and inquired of the Lord. He asked God how to respond, what should he do? God answered him. God will always answer those who call on Him.

This is what God answered: and David asked the LORD, “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” The LORD replied to him, “Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them and rescue the people.” 1 Samuel 30:8

Matthew 19:26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With people [as far as it depends on them] it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

8. Thanksgiving.

Giving thanks to God for who He is takes our eyes and mind off ourselves and whatever maybe bothering us, allowing us to focus on the Almighty God. This gives us renewed strength because we are reminded of who God is and what he can do.

Thanksgiving also brings to the forefront all that God has done for us in the past, what He is doing right now in our lives and gives us renewed faith for what He is set to do in the future. Thanksgiving refreshes the soul!

Psalm 100 Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

9. Some other things include being out in the sunshine, talking a walk, singing, laughing, a hug, and encouraging words like “you are doing a great job”, “I’m thankful for you”, “ I love you”, these things refill us and make us less prone to nasty emotions like anger, snappy words, short temper, sadness or depression.

Proverbs 25:11. Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right circumstances.

She is back to work 5-days a week in-office and in that transition phase that many of working moms can relate to. My kids are both in middle school, but I still remember what the days were like having babies and toddlers. We were sharing what our evenings look like as moms. Mine consist of driving my kids around what feels like endlessly. Dinner is often eaten in the car going from one sport to another. When I finally get home, I am often too tired to prep for the next day but always force myself too knowing it will make my morning easier. Her evenings consist of cleaning out the daycare bag, figuring out dinner; bedtime routine, playing with and getting all the quality time she can with her baby, prepping for the next day.

I shared that I empathized with her and it’s not lost on me how exhausting, it can be in that baby and toddler phase because it is 100% hands on. My stage of life is still busy and exhausting but it is very different than being in the trenches of that “can’t take your eyes off them” phase.

We talked about the morning routine too and in that moment she said something that made me laugh, even though it was not meant to be funny.

“I now shower at night because the mornings are too chaotic. But I don’t like being a shower at night person, I like being a shower in the morning person.”

In that moment we both started laughing. I quickly thought to myself what would be helpful to say in response besides just a laugh. I am always careful not to say things that appear to try to one up like “oh just wait until they are in middle school, then life will get really busy”. I find it strikes people down when other moms give the “oh just wait” response as a way to try to show how their life is also busy or busier.

Instead, I simply said, “I promise you will not always have to be a shower at night person” and smiled. I left it at that, and I think that was the right move as she smiled back, and we then carried on about other topics.

This got me thinking about the self-care things or even basic hygiene needs we shift as moms for the good of our households. It could be as simple as showering at night to ensure the morning time runs smoothly. Maybe you love getting pedicures but paint your nails at home now because finding time to get away to the salon becomes a chore.

If you are a mom struggling with putting your needs first sometimes or maybe even identifying what your need are, you need to hear this.

Self-care is not selfish.

Maybe say it out loud a few times.

The word “needs” can be looked at multiple ways. I am not talking about basic needs like shelter and food; we have needs as human beings that go beyond the basics. We attempt to meet a variety of our family’s needs each day whether it be with love and affection or ensuring their social and physical needs are met with extracurricular activities. It’s going to look different for each person and each family.

We have self needs and that is not selfish.

Do I need to get a pedicure every now and then? Well, no. But I have learned that when I can meet this self-care want that it makes me much happier; and being happy is good thing.

One of the ways I give myself self-care is with a regular workout routine. I learned early on as a mom that I need that physical burn for many reasons including my mental health. If I don’t, I suffer which likely means my household suffers.

When my kids were younger, I attended a weekly bible study/working mom group. This was a struggle each week battling with my internal mom guilt to be gone at bedtime. But it was not selfish to be taking care of my spiritual and emotional health. It made me a better mom and wife.

Self-care doesn’t have to be a big to-do. It could be 10 minutes of silence each day so you can sip coffee or pray or just sit in silence. What you find rejuvenating will be unique to you.

There will be seasons of life we have to be shower at night people because that is just how life runs best. But maybe that means on the weekends you can be a shower in the morning person. Be realistic about what makes your family run best, but don’t lose complete sight of yourself as well.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

That final sentence is powerful: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

With shows like Hoarders, plus the multitude of social media articles that deal with cleaning and organizing, it’s no wonder that we are more aware than ever before of how much “stuff” we own. Where DO we draw the line between “too much” and “just enough” and at what point do we become: a HOARDER?

Compulsive hoarding affects 6 to 15 million people in the U.S. alone.

Most of us have watched hoarding shows and thought, “Well, I’m certainly not THAT bad!” For a short time we feel better about the messes in our own homes. So, how do we know when we’ve stepped over the line into hoarding?

Here are some facts about hoarders that will help you understand the differences between delightfully messy and hoarding.

First, the Mayo Clinic’s definition of hoarding is this, “A persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs.”

You watch hoarding shows. If you find yourself watching shows on extreme hoarding, you may be watching to convince yourself that you haven’t joined that club.

You have other family members with hoarding tendencies. It’s a weird fact that hoarding tends to run in families. It’s unsure whether there is a genetic reason for this or whether the behavior has been modeled for them, but often hoarders can look in their family tree and find other people with the same issue.

You have a difficult time throwing anything away. If the thought of trashing something sends you into a panic and you feel anxiety, panic, or even anger at the mere thought of getting rid of your clutter, you may have crossed the line.

Much of what you own actually IS trash. If you find value in items others would consider trash, you may be a hoarder.

Compulsive hoarding often manifests during the childhood-teen years and progresses as you age. Quite possibly, you were a “collector” as a child, and your collections have grown over the years. Once you reached adulthood, the “collecting” intensified.

You are (overly) sentimentally attached to your possessions. A common symptom of hoarding disorder is the belief that inanimate objects possess “feelings”. You worry that if you declutter your possessions, you will end up disappointing them. Each of your items has a story (in your mind).

You lack a concrete organizational system. In your home, chaos reigns. Your past (earnest) attempts at organizing the clutter have been unsuccessful.

You may deny the fact that you have a problem. Most hoarders refuse to admit they have a problem, even though their friends and loved ones may have been (repeatedly) trying to tell them so. I once had a hoarding friend tell me that because she can throw garbage away that meant she was not a hoarder (she is).

You are a perfectionist. This is a weird one. How can a hoarder be a perfectionist? Yet often perfectionists are frozen with inactivity because: “If you can’t do it perfectly, don’t do it at all.”

You procrastinate. If you are paralyzed with inaction, it makes it impossible to organize or clean up your “stuff”. I admit I have this issue.

You own too many pets. Some hoarders hoard animals as well. Even two animals is too many if you aren’t equipped to care for them properly.

You are a compulsive shopper. You just can’t pass up a “bargain” even if it’s not something you need.

You have OCD, an addictive personality or anxiety. Until recently, it was thought that all hoarders have OCD. That is not true. Hoarders do suffer from at least one other mental condition though.

You feel safer surrounded by stuff. Many hoarders quite literally build walls around themselves with things. Stacks of newspapers, magazines, etc. become walls within walls.

You fear you’ll run out of an item. As a result you may stockpile things like toilet paper, underwear, soap and toothpaste.

You don’t want anyone touching your stuff. If you have watched any hoarding shows, you have probably seen the sweet hoarders go ballistic when someone attempts to clean their “treasures”. Some go so far as to dig through the garbage to make sure no one has thrown their stuff away.

You have distanced yourself. You do not entertain or invite friends or family to your house. A part of you is embarrassed at the mess and you know it is not “normal”.

Your hoarding has had a negative effect on your relationships. Hoarding affects marriages and children. Even the threat of divorce or losing a child is not enough to convince the hoarder to clean up.

Your home has become a safety hazard. From water damage to mold and rodent infestation, it’s hard to maintain a safe home when it’s covered in junk.

Rooms cannot be used as they were intended. Clutter has blocked the stove, the fridge, the bed or the shower and the rooms have become useless.

I spoke to a counselor who said that hoarders are very hard to treat. Their issues are very deep-seated, and they have trouble admitting they have a problem.

As I researched this subject though, I found an article written by a former hoarder. She recognized that she needed help, and she found a counselor AND a professional organizer to work with her. Her life has been transformed. She is not only happier, but she feels a peace that she hadn’t felt in decades.

Success stories should give hope to anyone suffering with hoarding tendencies. With help, no one has to live as a victim to their “stuff”. Remember:

“ … (there is) a time to keep and a time to throw away,” Ecclesiastes 3:6

“As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owners
except to feast their eyes on them?”
Ecclesiastes 5:11

Our days are chaotic but predictable. I feel like it is a constant go-go-go from the minute I wake up to when my head finally hits the pillow at night. Even though it can feel chaotic, I like it because it’s routine and I thrive on that. That go-go-go lifestyle that many of us can relate to can feel overwhelming. For me, it gets really overwhelming if I don’t prepare for the week ahead. But even finding time to do that is often too much and life gets too busy.

There are a few pretty simple things I do each weekend, typically on Sundays, to set my week ahead up for success. It doesn’t happen 100% of the time but when it does it always makes for a better run week.

Here are the five things I (try to) do to set my week up for success:

Look at the week in front of us. This could be laying in bed on a Sunday when we don’t have to rush to a sports function or maybe even in the car when my husband is driving us all somewhere. It doesn’t matter where, but I make a point to go over the week out loud with my husband. We have a shared Google calendar that really helps keep things organized. I will read over what we have ahead including which one of us is taking which kid to what sport. It doesn’t mean the week will go totally smooth, but it does help so there are fewer surprises. I can end a Sunday feeling like we are at least a little aligned on the week ahead.

Loosely plan for meals. I am not a pro meal planner. I don’t have a months’ worth of homemade meals in the freezer that I can pop out at any time. Instead, what I do is mentally think about what we are going to eat in the week ahead. I do my best to make sure we have the items we will need because I hate stopping at the grocery store during the week. We keep it simple and often have repeat meals each week. Taco Tuesdays, Burger Thursdays and so on. If I can, I love making a soup or a crock pot recipe on a Sunday to have ready to roll for the week.

Grocery shop, wash and chop. Part of my loose meal planning involves me grocery shopping at some point during the weekend. I try to write down the meals we will likely eat and what we need from the store to actually pull it off. The weeks I am really organized, I will wash, chop and store the things we’ll need. Fruit and veggies to easily grab for lunches including my own and maybe even pre-cooking taco meat so Taco Tuesday is that much easier to then pull off.

Make lunches ahead. My kids are both in middle school. My son will buy lunch a couple times a week, but my daughter remains a creature of habit and has a peanut butter & jelly sandwich every single day. I realized last year that those can actually freeze really well. I use a sandwich cutter and stick them in a reusable freezer bag. They can be pulled out one by one to have on hand for the week. It’s a small thing to take of our plate for the week but honestly so helpful.

Self Care. I am not always successful at this one but when I am it makes me feel so good. During the week, I consider it a win if I wash my face before bed. On weekends, I love doing some sort of self care. That could mean a face mask and moisturizer or maybe a hair wash and hair mask. It makes me feel really nice going into a busy week if I have incorporated some sort of self care during the weekend.

Finish laundry. This is another one I am not always successful at but I strive to be totally caught up on laundry on Sunday evening. I hate coming home on a Tuesday and glancing at piles on my laundry room floor. My teenage son recently started doing his own laundry which has also of coursed helped significantly.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are sojourners. We are on a journey and the destination is eternity where Jesus is. We know this because Jesus told us so. And His words are faithful and trustworthy.

Here are 7 points to consider, remember and find encouragement for our journey

1. Know your destination. We are headed somewhere. Our journey is not aimless. Our destination is heaven.

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20

We are headed to the place Jesus has gone ahead to prepare for us. It is specific and not subject to change along the way. We should not get distracted by false prophets who say they know a faster way to get God’s blessings, apart from the Bible. Stay the course! Do not move from it or look to the left or the right.

Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Proverbs 4:25

Give careful thought to the paths for your and be steadfast in all your ways Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:26-27

2. Get on the right road! Now that your destination is known and set, get on the correct road to it. You drive North and expect to end up East. You have to get onto the right road, which is Salvation through Jesus Christ. Are you all on the right road? Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior?

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” John 14:6.

3. Use the right navigation system. Whether it is memory, GPS or a physical map, use the right tool and punch in the right address to get to the specific destination. Sailors at sea without a compass get lost and could end up in hostile territory or dangerous waters. In the same way, with out the Bible, our navigator on this journey and our campus always pointing us to true North, we will be lost.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105

On this journey, one must constantly be referring to the navigation system or they will veer off the path. In the same way, God’s Word must constantly be before our eyes, in our ears, on our hearts and minds so we can obey it. Imagine if GPS tell you turn left in 600 meters and instead you turn right: make a U-turn, make a U-turn!!!! Is what the GPS will say. We have to follow the instructions of the navigation system in order to get to our destination. When the Bible says something, we do it. And yes, sometimes we miss the mark, thank God for His grace and mercy that allows us to make a U-turn and get back on course. Another thing I’m grateful for in the Bible as our navigation system is that it never says GPS signal lost! The Bible is always full of wisdom, instruction and profitable to direct us to all the good paths of righteousness.

Everything in the Scriptures is God’s Word. All of it is useful for teaching and helping people and for correcting them and showing them how to live“. 2 Timothy 3:16 

For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart“. Hebrews 4:12 

4. There are snacks for our journey! As a Mom, I always pack some snacks for my family whenever we are going on a trip. Along the way, when we are starting to get tired, I pull out the snacks and we get refreshed. Our bodies are revived, and we get a new kick of energy to continue the journey. The snacks will hold us over until we reach our destination or stop for a big meal.

God, being the loving, caring and thoughtful Father, has prepared plenty of spiritual nourishment to refresh and energize us on our journey. He has given us the fruit of the Spirit. We need love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control to be able not only to survive this journey of salvation but to thrive at it and enjoy it! Snacks make a road trip fun! In the same way, the joy that God gives us on this journey renews our strength. His peace keeps us calm even though the journey seems like it is going on for ever. Patience helps us persevere through hard times. Self control helps us not to compromise and get off the salvation journey or backslide. The Holy Spirit who gives us this fruit, also guides us, reminds us of Jesus’ teaching and instruction and gives us the power to obey God.

5. You need to refuel. When traveling on a long road trip, your fuel will run low and it is wise to add more fuel to your tank before the car stops on the highway. The driver and passengers will also need a rest stop to stretch and use the washroom.

Many Christians today, especially those in ministry, are not taking the much-needed time to rest and refuel. It is something we need to be more intentional and deliberate about, for the good of our journey and for the good of those we are serving. If the driver does not rest and refuel, the passengers are in trouble. If the shepherd does not rest and refuel, the sheep are in trouble.

When Elijah was worn out, tired, exhausted and burnt out after that great time of ministry on the Mount Carmel, did God say he was being of little faith? No, God did not even reprimand him, because God made us and understands our human frailties. We do not yet have a glorified body, so in this body, we need rest, and we need refuel. Both physical and spiritual refreshing.

So, God said to Elijah; eat and sleep.

“Then Elijah lay down under the bush and went to sleep. An angel came to him and touched him. The angel said, “Get up and eat!” Elijah looked around, and by his head there was a cake that had been baked over coals and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then went back to sleep. Later the Lord’s angel came to him again, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat! If you don’t, you will not be strong enough to make the long trip.” 1 Kings 19:5-7

When is the last time you took a break to refuel? Jesus often went to a quiet place alone to rest and refuel. Away from the crowds or congregation and away from the disciples or family and close friends. He did this often, not just once or twice but often. Frequently.

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Luke 5:16

6. Someone has made this trip before us, and He can give us all the tips.

Colossians 1:18 says Jesus is the first born from the dead. He is the first to make this journey successfully and reach the destination. So, it would do us good to listen to what He has to say because He is speaking from a place of firsthand knowledge and experience, not speculation or educated guesses.

Whenever I’m visiting a new place or country, I like to ask friends and family who have been there before what they recommend in terms of fun places to visit and great places to eat. Jesus is that person for us on this journey of salvation. He will tell us what to avoid, what we must do, like a local telling you the best places to eat or shop when you are new in town. 1 Peter 2:21 talks about Jesus leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 1 John 2:6 says Whoever says those who abide in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.

For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize and understand our weaknesses and temptations, but One who has been tempted [knowing exactly how it feels to be human] in every respect as we are, yet without [committing any] sin. Hebrews 4:15

7. You are not alone.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Little children (believers, dear ones), you are of God and you belong to Him and have [already] overcome them [the agents of the antichrist]; because He who is in you is greater than he (Satan) who is in the world [of sinful mankind].” 1 John 4:4

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:15-17

I will conclude with Ephesians 5:15 AMP Therefore see that you walk (let us say travel on this journey) carefully [living life with honor, purpose, and courage; shunning those who tolerate and enable evil], not as the unwise, but as wise [sensible, intelligent, discerning people]

Pumpkin and leaves décor, pulling out our thicker blankets and of course making sure my home smells like fall.

This Autumn simmer pot is not only an easy way to get your house smelling like all the wonderful parts of the season but it’s also a really cute DIY gift for teachers, co-workers and friends. Just put the ingredients in a mason jar and tell them to simmer in water. That’s it!

Here is what you need:

  • 1 apple (any kind), sliced
  • 1 orange (any kind), sliced
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • 1-2 cinnamon sticks
  • Water
  • Pot to simmer it in

Here is what you will do:

Fill your pot 1/4-1/2 full of water

Slice the apple and orange

Place the slices into the pot

Place the rest of the ingredients into the pot

Allow to simmer on your stove

Add more water if the water starts to deplete

Enjoy!

No takers? Exactly why we all need some help when it comes to saving time. Here are some of the things I have found to be helpful. We’d love to hear your ideas too!

1) Wash your dishes at work. No, not ALL your dishes. But instead of bringing home another chore to do when you get home, try washing your lunch and snack containers at work! I started doing this awhile ago and honestly it’ so nice getting it done versus bringing home dirty dishes.

2) Run a quick errand on your way to pick up the kids. I can’t tell you how many times I made the (wrong) decision to first pick up the kids and then run an errand when my kids were young. That’s the last they wanted to do after a long day. If you are able to, make your stop before pick up time.

3) Make lunches as you make dinner. You’re already in there making a mess of the kitchen, may as well throw together snacks and lunches for the next day for you and the kids while you’re at it.

4) Throw in laundry right when you get home. Working moms, we are not home and able to do quick chores like laundry during the day. On days where I can, I start a load when I walk through the door so I am more likely to actually dry it and even fold it before the evening completely gets away from me.
Pro Tip- utilize the “delay cycle” wash. I will sometimes do this so that the washing machine will start around the time I am commuting home so I can just put the load straight into the dryer when I get home.

5) Plan out a week’s worth of outfits on Sunday. I am always up before the rest of my household meaning I either get ready at the gym or in silence AKA I must have my outfit picked out (and packed for the gym) the night before so I don’t wake them up. But to save more time, try planning a whole week’s worth of outfits. Check out my post on wardrobe tips for the office.

6) Say no. Many of us want to pretend there are 44 hours in a day and that we can conquer it all. We cannot. You will save time if you stop trying and give yourself room to breathe.

7) Call to book appointments first thing in the morning. Studies show the call/wait time is less.

8) Find a dentist by work. Don’t waste time traveling to and from the office. Make lunch time appointments and avoid taking away family time.

9) Trunk pickups. This became popular during Covid times and it’s one that I have done ever since 2020. My son has drum lessons weekly right by a Target. I will add items we need during the week so that every Tuesday I can check out and grab my order without getting out of my car. I actually think I also spend less because I am not impulse shopping in-store.

10) Pack it all up the night before. On the days I get ready at the gym, I get ready super quick because I have it all packed up the night before. This could include not only outfits but think about also backpacks, lunches and even signatures on things like field trip forms etc. In the morning, aim to just be able to grab and go versus searching for things or making lunches.

The Bible begins this way. We have all heard this scripture so many times that we tend to gloss over the miraculous nature of the words.

Our God CREATED the heaven(s) and the earth.

In our fast-paced lives, the beauty that surrounds us seems to disappear into the background. We ignore the delicate wonder of each blade of grass or the fact that the trees in our yards grew out of tiny seeds. Everything in nature is a miracle.

My youngest grandkids came to visit this week and after we played with toys, they announced that they were bored. I typed up a quick scavenger list, handed them my phone and sent them off to the backyard to take pictures of the things they found. I customized the list to include things that I knew were in my yard, things like: Mushrooms, a potato, a flower, bugs, spider web, clover, grass, the sky and clouds.

It was fun to watch through the window and see them running around laughing and pointing out what they had found. Here are some of their pictures:

After her older brother ran around saying, “Here’s a tree, here’s a spider web,” etc., his four-year-old sister asked to use the phone. She took this one:

She said, “And here’s a Dalty!” They both thought that was hilarious, but it also brought home the fact that God made us too!

For a little while, the kids focused on the wonders that surround them every day. What a blessing that was for them. They were able to slow down and take in the tiny things that God had created.

Their pictures reminded me that I need to slow down and take in God’s creations too. I headed out later using the same rules the kids had: Backyard Only. It’s amazing how many treasures you can find in your own backyard.

I spent some wonderful quiet time wandering my yard. When did all those mushrooms pop up around the oak tree? They looked like a fairy garden.

I hadn’t even noticed that I had a second batch of raspberries on my bushes.

I looked up at the tall sunflowers that had miraculously grown from little seeds and I saw that my oak tree was producing the cutest little acorns.

He delivered them perfectly, with expression and with ease. The work he had done during his Lower School years developing the joy and capacity to memorize quickly allowed Caleb to capture Shakespeare’s beautiful language beyond his own part in the play. It was clear he delighted in this accomplishment.

The patterns and repeated actions we engage in shape who we are. In the church, the liturgies we participate in can allow God to shape our souls.   5. It propels student thought, giving them fluency with key information, data, and facts that are used on a routine basis and freeing their minds to do more complex, innovative thinking.

Susan Bauer, the author of the Story of the World series and recent speaker at The Bear Creek School, says memorization “builds into children’s minds an ability to use complex English syntax.” She describes this as a child’s language store and says memorization fills “the language store with a whole new set of patterns.”
