Venue: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, 18 - 29 October 2010
Background and Rationale
The 10th Conference of the Parties (COP-10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity took place in Nagoya, Japan. At the two-week long meeting the international community, including the EU, have been striving to agree on a post-2010 policy framework for preserving biodiversity. Scientists from the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) have taken part in this event to present their findings on soil biodiversity as well as on forest fragmentation and green infrastructure.
Soil Biodiversity Atlas
Soil is recognised as having an important role in many topical environmental issues, including climate change, biodiversity and desertification. The IES presents its European Atlas of Soil Biodiversity, the first of its kind. This new atlas describes the range of life to be found within soil and how soil plays a crucial role in maintaining other ecosystems.
