Phonemes
Scope Note:
The smallest units of speech that distinguish one utterance from another in a given language -- for example, "p" in "pat" and "b" in "bat" represent two English phonemes -- "p" in "pat" and "p" in "spat" represent the same phoneme, despite their difference in sound, because this difference is never the only distinguishing feature between two words in English
